By Nick Abramo on August 29, 2016

Kahuku head coach Vavae Tata released John Hao as the Red Raiders’ offensive coordinator after Friday’s 28-0 victory over Waianae, according to two trusted Honolulu Star-Advertiser sources. Reached by phone this morning, Hao did not want to discuss the issue. Phone calls to Tata and Kahuku athletic director Gillian Yamagata were not immediately returned. Hao, the former Saint Louis and University of Hawaii standout quarterback, came on board with the Kahuku offense when Tata was hired to start the 2015 […]

By Billy Hull on August 29, 2016

Kahuku’s impressive 28-0 victory over Waianae last Friday did not go unnoticed on the mainland. After holding the previously undefeated Seariders to 32 total yards to record their 16th consecutive victory, the Red Raiders jumped seven spots to No. 18 in the latest USA Today Super 25 rankings released Monday. Bishop Gorman took over the No. 1 spot in the rankings after thrashing then-No. 5 Cedar Hill (Tex.) 44-14 on Saturday. The Gaels will host Kahuku in Las Vegas on […]

Elvis travels big red road to end zone

By Paul Honda on August 27, 2016

There were notable aspects of Kahuku’s 28-0 win over No. 4 Waianae up and down the board on Friday night. It was a stellar night on special teams, where the top-ranked Red Raiders consistently set up good field position for their offense. It was certainly a dominant night defensively for coach Vavae Tata‘s squad, shutting out one of the state’s most potent offenses. But it was also a memorable night because Elvis was in the building. Elvis Vakapuna‘s presence coincided […]

By Nick Abramo on August 27, 2016

It’s on to Cleveland … er … Campbell for the Kahuku football team after winning Friday’s big home matchup against Waianae, 28-0. The last sentence was a reference to Bill Belichick, the New England Patriots’ head coach who doesn’t give out a ton of information to the media and repeated multiple times that, “It’s on to Cleveland,” who the Patriots were playing the next weekend, to a reporter inquiring about Belichick’s thoughts after a victory. Like Belichick, Red Raiders head […]

Kahuku vs. Waianae: The Crunch Bowl?

By Billy Hull on August 24, 2016

At one point in history, Kahuku and Waianae had combined to win 11 consecutive OIA titles. The Red Raiders have won more OIA championships than anyone else — 24 to be exact. Next on the list? Waianae with 18. Some will say it’s hard to call it a rivalry when Kahuku has won 15 consecutive meetings, but the atmosphere at Carleton Weimer Field on Friday night when the fourth-ranked Seariders face the top-ranked Red Raiders will definitely show otherwise. Kahuku versus […]
