By Jason Kaneshiro on October 23, 2016

Vavae Tata emerged from the Kahuku locker room and eased into one of Aloha Stadium’s orange seats to take in a bit of the second game of Saturday’s OIA semifinal doubleheader. The Kahuku coach was about 15 minutes removed from the Red Raiders’ resounding 38-0 victory over Waianae and touched on his postgame message to his team while Farrington and Kapolei went through their pregame routines on the field below. “We’re getting there, but we still haven’t played a complete […]

GAME NIGHT 10/22: Kahuku/Waianae

By Hawaii Prep World on October 22, 2016

The first game of an OIA semifinal doubleheader at Aloha Stadium tonight pits two teams extremely familiar with each other. No. 1 Kahuku (8-1) and No. 5 Waianae (8-2) meet for the second time this season and fourth time in the last two years. The Red Raiders have been as dominant as ever with their 21-game winning streak against Hawaii teams going strong. Kahuku beat Waianae 28-0 earlier this year in one of its five shutouts. Against Hawaii teams, Kahuku’s […]

By Hawaii Prep World on October 17, 2016

Kahuku’s 63-0 shutout of Leilehua on Friday in the quarterfinals of the OIA Division I playoffs wasn’t enough to move up in the latest USA Today Super 25 national rankings. The Red Raiders (8-1) remained at No. 22 in the nation with every ranked team winning for the second week in a row. Kahuku was especially impressive, notching its fifth shutout of the season and 11th over the last two years under head coach Vavae Tata. The 11 shutouts in […]

OIA semifinals set for Saturday

By Jerry Campany on October 15, 2016

The OIA semifinals are set with Waianae’s thrilling win over Mililani. With the HHSAA’s new open division tournament, the games won’t mean quite as much as they have in the past but they will still be the only road to an OIA title. All four teams are already locked into state tournament slots. Kahuku is the favorite to repeat as public school champion, but will have to turn back Waianae to earn the right. The Red Raiders beat the Seariders […]

Many (many) happy returns for Kahuku

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 15, 2016

Keeping the Kahuku defense out of the end zone has become just as difficult as scoring on the Red Raiders. The Red Raiders defense has contributed nine touchdowns to Kahuku’s scoring total this season while allowing just four against OIA competition. With cornerback Kekaula Kaniho’s 33-yard interception return in Friday’s 63-0 OIA Division I quarterfinal win over Leilehua, the Red Raiders have scored a defensive touchdown in seven of their nine games overall. That doesn’t even count the seven touchdowns […]

Leilehua-Kahuku rematch is a bonus for Mules

By Nick Abramo on October 13, 2016

No. 1 Kahuku is a big favorite to beat unranked Leilehua in the Oahu Interscholastic Association quarterfinals Friday night. But the best part about it for the Mules (4-5) is they have a lot to gain even if they lose. They have already qualified for next month’s state tournament, so what better way to go into the quarterfinals than against the top-ranked team in the state? >> A victory would be a mammoth upset. >> A loss? Well, that’s what […]
