Kahuku football to play Bingham in Las Vegas

The Kahuku football team will play in Las Vegas for the second year in a row, interim head coach Makoa Freitas said today. On Sept. 9, the Red Raiders will play Utah Division 5A state champion Bingham (South Jordan, Utah) in the inaugural Polynesian Football Classic as the second game of a doubleheader at Sam Boyd Stadium. Makoa Freitas learned a lot from former coaches Dick Tomey at Arizona and Tony Dungy with the Indianapolis Colts. You could have worse mentors. A lot worse. Kahuku’s Vimahi gets Nebraska offer

Sophomore Enokk Vimahi of Kahuku received his fourth football scholarship offer over the weekend. Nebraska, which has former Hawaii offensive line coach Mike Cavanaugh on staff, made an offer to Vimahi. The 6-foot-4, 250-pound Kahuku lineman posted the news on his Twitter feed. His other offers are BYU, Fresno State and Hawaii.

Makoa Freitas was officially introduced as the Kahuku football interim head coach Sunday by the KahukuHigh.org website. Freitas takes over for Vavae Tata, who spent two years at the helm and brought the Red Raiders a Division I state championship and another appearance in the first Open Division state title game. Kahuku football head coach Vavae Tata is no longer the head coach of the Kahuku football team, according to multiple sources close to the situation who spoke on the condition of anonymity late Thursday night. Kahuku’s Kaniho commits to Boise State

The reigning Honolulu Star-Advertiser defensive player of the year will continue his football career in the Mountain West Conference. Kahuku defensive back Kekaula Kaniho made his commitment public on Sunday, tweeting that he will accept a scholarship offer from Boise State.
