Kahuku’s Reed commits to Virginia

Kahuku defensive lineman Samson Reed gave his oral commitment to Virginia on Monday, according to the StreakingTheLawn.com website. Reed is a 3-star recruit and is rated the No. 1 recruit in Hawaii by ESPN. He also has offers from Hawaii, Washington State, BYU, Fresno State, Nevada, San Diego State and UNLV. They have combined to provide fans with two memorable state championship games in each of the past two seasons. Former Kahuku all-state defensive back Alohi Gilman isn’t the only human excited about his transfer from the US Naval Academy to Notre Dame. Before Gilman could tweet the news at roughly 11:31 am Hawaii time today, Notre Dame Football posted the news 15 minutes earlier. Someone is clearly stoked. Well, that didn’t take very long. Former Star-Advetiser All-State football player Alohi Gilman of Kahuku made a visit to Notre Dame over the weekend. He had recently announced plans to transfer out of the US Naval Academy, where he had a strong freshman season. Gilman is the latest Hawaii product to transfer schools this offseason. Kahuku is the top football team in Hawaii this preseason, according to MaxPreps.com. On Thursday, the website released its list of the No. 1 team in each state, and chose Kahuku with the following explanation: “The Red Raiders check in as the No. 1 team from the Aloha State largely because of superstar quarterback Sol-Jay Maiava. Kahuku/Gorman game featured in documentary

Last September’s game between Kahuku and Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas was featured in last Wednesday’s installment of QB1: Beyond the Lights, an online documentary on the streaming service go90. The show follows the senior seasons of Jake Fromm, a Georgia commit, Tayvon Bowers, a Wake Forest commit, and Bishop Gorman quarterback Tate Martell, who is currently enrolled at Ohio State.
