No. 2 Kahuku not content with shutout of Waianae

By Paul Honda on August 19, 2017

There is work to be done, Makoa Freitas said. In fact, more than once, the first-year head coach at Kahuku pointed out that video tape of Friday’s battle at Waianae will be combed through. Mistakes will be fixed. Freitas wasn’t quite somber after No. 2 Kahuku’s 37-0 win at No. 8 Waianae — the first meeting at Raymond Torii Field since 1975 between two of the most historically-prominent football programs in the OIA — but he was not overly enthused […]

It wasn’t perfect, which is OK with Kahuku football coach Makoa Freitas. The first-year head coach keeps striving, though, and even with a 37-0 win over No. 8 Waianae, the Red Raiders have a ways to go before Freitas is satisfied. Kahuku, now 2-0 in OIA Division I play and is ranked No. 2 behind Saint Louis in the Star-Advertiser Football Top 10.

GAME NIGHT 8/18: Kahuku/Waianae

By Hawaii Prep World on August 18, 2017

FINALLY. For the first time since 1975, Kahuku heads out to the West side to face Waianae at Raymond Torii Stadium. Waianae hasn’t beaten Kahuku since 2001, a span of 17 straight losses. The Seariders haven’t even scored on the Red Raiders since 2014 as Kahuku has posted four shutouts in a row in the series. It doesn’t bode well that the Seariders have scored one touchdown in eight quarters so far this season. Kahuku hasn’t won in Waianae since […]

Waianae FINALLY gets Kahuku at home

By Billy Hull on August 17, 2017

Last year before the regular season game between then-No. 1 Kahuku and Waianae, we wrote about the long rivalry between the two schools. Kahuku vs. Waianae: The Crunch Bowl? Since then, Kahuku went on to win its 25th OIA championship, extending its lead over Waianae, which has 18. Kahuku also beat Waianae in the OIA playoffs, making it 17 straight wins against the Seariders. Maybe even more impressive is the four straight shutouts Kahuku has logged against Waianae. You have […]

Leilehua came to play despite 24-0 loss

By Nick Abramo on August 12, 2017

Even though the final score was 24-0, this was no walkover. No. 2 Kahuku, the defending Oahu Interscholastic Association champion, was clinging to a 10-point lead well into the fourth quarter before finishing strong to beat Leilehua. As has been the case for years, it was the Kahuku defense that carried the day in the home and season opener. The Red Raiders (1-0) came up with four interceptions, including three in the first half, to turn the tides. The defensive […]

GAME NIGHT 8/11: Leilehua/Kahuku

By Hawaii Prep World on August 11, 2017

Two-time defending OIA Division I champion Kahuku opens its 2017 season at home on the North Shore against Leilehua, which barely held on to defeat St. Francis, 13-9, last Saturday at Hugh Yoshida Stadium. Kahuku has won nine straight against the Mules since Leilehua upset Kahuku in the semifinals of the state tournament in 2008. Leilehua Mules (1-0) Head coach: Mark Kurisu, second season, 11-2-1 2017 Mules roster VS. No. 2 Kahuku Red Raiders (0-0) Head coach: Makoa Freitas, first […]

Kahuku’s Vimahi lands first SEC offer

By Billy Hull on August 8, 2017

Kahuku junior offensive lineman Enokk Vimahi landed his first scholarship offer from the SEC on Thursday. Ole Miss became the 10th school overall to offer the 6-foot-4, 260-pound Vimahi, who opens his season Friday night at home against Leilehua. Vimahi has put together an impressive offer sheet — USC, UCLA, Oregon, Nebraska, BYU, Utah, Syracuse, Fresno State, Hawaii and now the Rebels. 247Sports lists Vimahi as the No. 112 overall player, the 14th-best offensive tackle overall and the third-best tackle in […]
