A little courage takes Konawaena long way

By Paul Honda on August 3, 2018

The first reaction was shock. Then came resolve. At Konawaena, football has always been tradition, going back to the dynasty — 12 BIIF titles in a row from 1980 to ’91 — and the success in the 26 seasons since. But traveling off-island to take on the Goliath on his home turf — Kahuku — is completely off the charts. The Wildcats, 9-3-1 last season, and OIA defending champion Red Raiders kick off on Saturday, 6 p.m., at Carleton Weimer […]

Pass-happy Kahuku shows up at Waipahu

By Nick Abramo on July 27, 2018

Wesley Alo-Maiava had a spectacular first play Friday. The Kahuku running back took it to the house — an 80-yard run — on the first play of the Red Raiders’ scrimmage against Waipahu. After finding the end zone, he immediately lifted his hands toward the Waipahu bench and gave a wave. “That was to all the Waipahu kids,” Alo-Maiava said. “Let them know we’re here.” It was not a show of cockiness as much as it was a release of […]

Yet, that’s one thing that’s on Miki Ah You‘s mind. The Kahuku linebacker walks into the 2018 season aiming for the defensive unit he captains to be the best in school history. That’s really something, if it happens. In 2016, under coach Vavae Tata, Kahuku’s defense held 12 Hawaii opponents to […]

Schwenke, 25, was found dead in his sleep by his family Sunday morning, according to his father, McKay Schwenke. Kona went on to play a four-year career at Notre Dame.
