Loss of Ah You, Kaniho doesn’t slow Kahuku’s defense

By Nick Abramo on September 14, 2018

No. 6 Kamehameha outgained No. 2 Kahuku 234-231 in scrimmage yards Friday night. Yet, it was Kahuku that came out with a 24-7 victory at Aloha Stadium. The Red Raiders were able to ride the momentum of their 24-0 first half that was, not surprisingly, spearheaded by their defense and special teams. A punt block, a fumble recovery and an interception turned into 17 points. In addition, Kahuku (4-1, 1-0 OIA Open) also put together a patented, smashmouth, 80-yard TD […]

Waianae’s defense makes life tough for No. 2 Kahuku

By Nick Abramo on August 18, 2018

Guess who the leading rusher was in Kahuku’s 49-13 football victory over Waianae on Friday night? Some shifty or bull-like running back from Kahuku? Wrong. It was Waianae’s Kaai Tambaoan-Kaeo, who carried the ball 15 times for 86 yards. As a matter of fact, the two offenses were relatively equal. The Red Raiders (3-0, 1-0 OIA Open) outgained the Seariders (0-3, 0-1 Open) 173 to 133 in total yards from scrimmage. The problem for Waianae’s offense, as it often is, […]

Q&A: Kahuku coach Sterling Carvalho

By Paul Honda on August 17, 2018

A 2-0 start for Kahuku is no surprise. The No. 2 team in the Star-Advertiser Football Top 10 is hungry. The Red Raiders want it all, as always, and that goal hasn’t been achieved as often. Kahuku has captured just one of the last five state championships in the HHSAA’s highest tier. There doesn’t feel like a significant drop-off, though. After winning the state crown in 2015, Kahuku reached the final in the past two seasons, losing to Saint Louis. […]
