Mililani ends Kahuku’s 51-game home win streak

By Paul Honda on September 29, 2018

There are few streaks that never end. It’s just that Kahuku’s 51-game home winning streak seemed unbreakable. Omnipotent. It carried an aura of its own, and the invincibility permeated life on the North Shore. That came to a halt on Saturday night with a resounding 38-10 loss to No. 4 Mililani (6-2, 4-0 OIA Open). No. 2 Kahuku (4-2, 1-1) simply couldn’t get access to the state’s all-time career record holder in passing yardage, Dillon Gabriel. The southpaw passed for […]

Kahuku’s Miki Ah You named Polynesian Bowl All Star

By Billy Hull on September 27, 2018

Kahuku linebacker Miki Ah You has been selected a Polynesian Bowl All Star. The 6-foot-1, 215-pound University of Washington commit suffered a season-ending knee injury three weeks ago against Saint Louis and will not be able to play in the 2019 Polynesian Bowl, but was still selected for what he has achieved on the field and his high character off of it. Ah You was selected to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser All-State first team as a junior — one of only two […]

Kahuku’s QB competition keeps going every day

By Paul Honda on September 27, 2018

The Kahuku Red Raiders are playing, as always, for a championship. Kahuku is ranked No. 2 in the Star-Advertiser Football Top 10. The Red Raiders are 4-1 overall, and just 1-0 in OIA Open play. Wins over Punahou and Kamehameha, and a loss to No. 1 Saint Louis — all ILH Open teams — do not count in OIA standings. Kahuku hosts No. 4 Mililani, which is 3-0 in OIA Open play, on Saturday. That will be followed by road […]

Open Division’s new coaches go with what works

By Jerry Campany on September 21, 2018

The two new coaches in the Open division have taken the fight to the ground. Just over a month into the season, Kahuku’s Sterling Carvalho and Daniel Sanchez of Farrington have decided to go with what has worked for their prestigious programs, leaning on the running games that made them perennial state contenders. Carvalho, who took over for Makoa Freitas on Kahuku’s head coaching carousel, has run the ball on 164 of his team’s 279 offensive snaps this year. That […]
