Q&A: ‘Iolani’s Wendell Look on D-I state semifinal

By Paul Honda on November 8, 2018

The seventh-ranked ‘Iolani Raiders (8-2) are no strangers to state-tournament football. Waipahu? The pendulum has swung back up in recent seasons. The two teams square off on Friday at Waipahu’s Masa Yonamine Athletic Complex in a rematch of a week-2 battle. That game was dominated at ‘Iolani, 55-14, but Raiders coach Wendell Look says the circumstances and environment are much different this time. Winning a semifinal game on another team’s home turf in the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships […]

Did you hear? Say and Look go head to head

By Nick Abramo on October 14, 2018

There’s something endearing about the two coaching Wendells in Hawaii high school football. They’ve been around for a long while and are among the most respected guys in the coaching fraternity here. Their teams hardly ever play against each other, but they did Friday night. We’re talking about Wendell Look of ‘Iolani and Wendell Say of Aiea, who took their teams out onto Na Alii’s rainy, puddled field for a regular-season finale. And, despite the 30-3 final score, it was […]

Nishigaya (4 TDs) gets ‘Iolani on cusp of playoffs

By Brian McInnis on October 6, 2018

One Team is one win, maybe less, from clinching a state playoff berth. And ‘Iolani has its small assassin, senior running back Kaua Nishigaya, to thank in very large part. Behind Nishigaya’s four touchdowns, the Raiders (7-2, 6-1 ILH Division I) moved to the cusp of clinching a state berth with a 41-14 win over Castle on Friday night. It was just the second time the teams played on the Knights’ field (third overall), and the Raiders emerged comfortably with […]

Q&A: ‘Iolani’s record-breaking kicker, Mika Makekau

By Paul Honda on October 2, 2018

The fact is simple enough. Mika Makekau is the new record holder for the longest field goal by a girl in state history. Her 44-yard FG was one of three successful kicks in a 30-19 win over Damien two weeks ago. The win is key to ‘Iolani’s post-season qualifying chances, and she might get a shot at the national girls record of 48 yards before her prep career is done. Makekau, younger sister of current Navy starting wide receiver Keoni-Kordell […]
