GAME NIGHT 9/13: Waipahu/’Iolani

By Paul Honda on September 13, 2019

‘Iolani 48, Waipahu 14 Waipahu kickoff is a nice one again, touchback. And a Waipahu player says something to a referee, and the yellow flag flies. Unsportsmanlike conduct. Why would any player say something that bad to a referee on a touchback? Incredible. Waipahu tacks on a TD before the close. Three more carries for Failauga, who picks up 17, 17 and then a 2-yard TD. That’s 298 yards on 41 carries. None of it came easy. IOLANI 48, WAIPAHU […]

But in ‘Iolani territory, he overthrows his man and it’s picked off by the Raiders secondary, Stirling Sakashita with it. 9:46: Hedani goes up the middle again … this time through a gaping hole, and he’s going all the way to the […]

Coaches chime in as ‘Iolani’s Wendell Look closes in on win No. 200

By Paul Honda on September 3, 2019

In 1989, Wendell Look was a defensive line coach at his alma mater, ‘Iolani. He was also the defensive coordinator, coaching the likes of Rod York, who went on to play for Hawaii before embracing a new life as a coach at Mililani. Look became ‘Iolani’s head coach in ’91. But in ’89, he and wife Linda sent an entry to the Honolulu Advertiser’s weekly Pigskin Picks. One weekend, their entry was the lone, perfect, 15-0 winner. That included the […]

‘Iolani wins Father Bray game but still struggles to close games

By Billy Hull on August 24, 2019

‘Iolani coach Wendell Look was very happy with the Raiders’ 20-point third quarter that helped put away Kaimuki 34-24 in the Father Bray Classic on Saturday at Kozuki Stadium. As for the final 12 minutes, well, that’s becoming a concern. “I didn’t like how we finished the game,” Look said after ‘Iolani fumbled on the Kaimuki 2-yard line in the fourth quarter and failed to score on its final three drives. “These guys need to learn that they can’t finish […]

Quarterback battle possibly brewing at ‘Iolani

By Kyle Sakamoto on August 16, 2019

If ‘Iolani has learned anything in the early season, it is a team which has two capable quarterbacks. Senior Jonah Chong, last season’s starter, and junior Samuel Faumuina both had their moments in a 31-10 triumph over host Aiea in an OIA-ILH Division I game Friday. Chong, a senior, received most of the playing time over the Raiders’ first two games, completing 15 of 30 passes for 261 yards and three touchdowns. Faumuina was 3-for-7 for 55 yards and a […]
