Who’s going to be the next Yuuya?

By Paul Honda on September 27, 2013

Who will be this year’s Yuuya Kato? Can’t remember him? Let’s refresh, shall we? In the fall of 2012, ‘Iolani lost running back Kody Mento to injury midway through the season. Enter Kato, who had 22 carries in the first five games for 149 yards and one touchdown. After that, starting against Kamehameha on Sept. 20, he averaged 18 attempts per game, cracking the century mark in five of the Raiders’ last seven games. For the year, he rushed for […]

Pupule’s ballot: Voters catching up to Pupule

By Paul Honda on September 24, 2013

Mililani is moving up in the Star-Advertiser Top 10 poll, which means I’m ahead of the curve or just prophetic. Or just lucky. After all, even a broken clock is right twice a day. Polls, of course, are not about predictions. Mililani simply looked to me like the second-best team in the state for some time — since Kamehameha’s loss to Punahou, to be precise. Didn’t really seem that way, though, while the Trojans were down 21-7 to Campbell at […]

Pupule’s ballot: Guess who at No. 2

By Paul Honda on September 19, 2013

Still some video to edit, but I’m squeezing this in. For the first time in weeks, we have virtually no debate about who is No. 1 in the islands. But I can’t help wondering just a bit about how good Mililani really is. They gave Punahou a serious battle in Week 2, a closer game than Kamehameha gave the Buffanblu. Even Lahainaluna, despite its lack of strength of schedule, has been impressive defensively. A dominant rushing attack. A dominant defense. […]

ILH keeping close eye on hits

By Paul Honda on September 18, 2013

Officially, it wasn’t a meeting. Still, Punahou coach Kale Ane was willing to discuss the issue with the Interscholastic League of Honolulu before and after his team’s game with Kamehameha over the weekend. “It was a very informal phone conversation with the football coordinator (Georges Gilbert),” Ane said on Tuesday. “It was more talking about the game so we’re aware of things.” Clearly, in a new world of rule changes to protect players, the word is safety, and that word […]

Video: #3 Saint Louis vs. #10 ‘Iolani

By Paul Honda on September 18, 2013

Part 1 Part 2 The Raiders led 10-0 and Crusader nation was on the edge of its seats. Then The second quarter arrived, Saint Louis’ offensive line took control, Adam Noga embarked on an historic performance and the Crusaders went on to a 49-13 win. ‘Iolani’s defense wasn’t quite the same after cornerback Max Look got hurt.

Update: Saint Louis 49, ‘Iolani 13, final

By Paul Honda on September 14, 2013

5:09 p.m. We’re about 4 minutes away from kickoff for No. 3 Saint Louis and No. 10 ‘Iolani. They have quite a history together. 5:21 p.m. Keoni-Kordell Makekau’s 30-yard field goal gives ‘Iolani a 3-0 lead with 9:39 to go in the first quarter. 5:28 p.m. Crusaders are in hurry-up mode and drive to the ‘Iolani 8-yard line before stalling. On fourth down, they go for it rather than kick a field goal, which leads to a fumble by Ryder […]

Pupule’s ballot: Still 1a and 1b

By Paul Honda on September 13, 2013

This may seem manic or chaotic or just wishy-washy, but here goes. I voted Kamehameha No. 1 on my ballot for the Star-Advertiser Prep Football Top 10 this week. Yet, I expect Punahou to win on a last-minute field goal against the Warriors tonight. Say whuhhh… It’s like this. The Warriors, my opinion, have proven to be worth of the top spot by virtue of five wins, almost all against elite competition. Punahou deserves the spot, too, but until we […]

Video: #2 Kamehameha vs. #9 ‘Iolani

By Paul Honda on September 8, 2013

Part 1 Part 2 Goliath handled his business against David. The Raiders looked crisp and precise early with a scoring drive on their second possession. But Kamehameha sticks to what works well: hard-nosed defense and a battering-ram offense. Warriors running back Brandon Kahookele went for a career high 244 yards on 27 attempts, not far off the school record held by Chad Mahoe. See game action in parts 1 and 2, and post-game interviews in part 2.
