State champ football coaches come from 1 team

By Nick Abramo on February 25, 2015

Rod York looked like he wanted to get out on the field right now, and coach, or, maybe even play. He was jonesing for football, but instead was at the head table as a guest speaker for a gathering of ‘Iolani alumni and other special guests on Tuesday. The crowd at the Hukilau Honolulu Executive Center was mostly male, mostly sports-oriented, and most — it appeared — had a good time listening to the two reigning state championship football coaches. […]

No appeal from ‘Iolani on Monday

By Nick Abramo on February 2, 2015

‘Iolani did not appeal for an exemption to a football classification rule at the ILH’s monthly meeting, athletic director Carl Schroers said Monday. By rule, the Raiders — who have won eight state Division II titles — will be moving up to Division I next year, unless they file an appeal. According to ILH assistant athletic director Georges Gilbert, no motion was made on the subject at the Monday meeting. Gilbert said ILH schedules for the fall season will be finalized […]

‘Iolani football looks headed to Division I

By Billy Hull on January 31, 2015

If you missed Saturday’s Star-Advertiser story by Nick Abramo about ‘Iolani likely playing Division I football next year, subscribers can read it here. An ILH rule instituted two years ago stipulates that any Division II team in any sport that wins two ILH or state championships in a row must move up a level for at least one year. The Raiders have the ability to appeal the decision, but Raiders athletic director Carl Schroers says “We are obligated to go […]

‘Iolani’s ‘hungry’ players made Look’s job easier

By Nick Abramo on November 28, 2014

Wendell Look has been around the championship block a few times. He’s had great and memorable teams at ‘Iolani, but this most recent version of the Raiders was one of the most satisfying for the veteran coach. After beating Lahainaluna 31-14 in the state Division II final last week, Look was asked if it was his toughest coaching job. The question came in light of the fact that ‘Iolani did not make the state final in 2013, thus ending a […]

No superstars: Just one team and another title

By Paul Honda on November 23, 2014

This could’ve been the year Lahainaluna finally broke through to win the Division II state championship. Instead, ‘Iolani proved once again why it is the class of D-II with an utterly convincing 31-14 win on Friday in the final of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA State Championships. That’s eight state championships in the last 11 seasons for coach Wendell Look and his program. The Lunas came into the final unbeaten with a dominant ground attack, but the Raiders and defensive coordinator […]

TRENCH WARFARE: Mowat vs. Ide

By Billy Hull on November 21, 2014

It’s Oahu vs. Maui in the Division II state final as ‘Iolani, winner of seven of the last eight state football titles, takes on Lahainaluna, looking for its first state crown. Our battle in the trenches features Lahainaluna’s two-way lineman, Connor Mowat (6-feet-0, 270 pounds, Senior), on defense, going up against ‘Iolani center Devin Ide (5-11, 218, Jr.). The Raiders can’t afford to be one-dimensional against the Lunas. They have to run the ball. How Ide holds up against Mowat […]

LIVE BLOG: ‘Iolani 31, Lahainaluna 14, Final

First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Division II Football State Championships Aloha Stadium Championship game No. 1 Lahainaluna (9-0) vs No. 2 ‘Iolani (6-3) First Quarter ‘Iolani wins the toss and elects to receive. Interesting. Raiders are in white jerseys, black helmets, black pants. Lunas are all red, top to bottom.
