‘Iolani wants to push every team it plays

By Billy Hull on July 31, 2016

Make no mistake: The ‘Iolani Raiders know the challenge that lies ahead. Playing a Division I schedule against Kamehameha, Punahou and Saint Louis in back-to-back weeks is the toughest task any team in the state faces. It’s the result of a decade of dominating Division II play, winning eight D-II state titles and 11 consecutive ILH D-II championships. Last season’s first run against the ILH behemoths resulted in an 0-6 record, but not without some prideful results. There was an […]

‘Iolani’s Makekau picks Navy

By Billy Hull on January 29, 2016

‘Iolani senior Keoni-Kordell Makekau said Friday he has committed to Navy and will sign with the Midshipmen next Wednesday on National Letter of Intent Signing Day. The speedy 5-foot-10, 170-pound wide receiver visited Navy back in November and took in a home game against SMU. He committed shortly after the trip but admits he’s not into social media much, so word hadn’t really gotten out. “Yeah I don’t really do much of that,” Makekau said. “I committed after my trip.” […]

By Billy Hull on January 26, 2016

‘Iolani offensive lineman Josh Hauani’o joined the ever-growing list of local football players that will stay home for college when he committed to the University of Hawaii on Tuesday night. Hauani’o, a 6-foot-4, 300-pound senior, was offered by Hawaii head coach Nick Rolovich on Monday and took 24 hours to mull over a decision before letting the coaching staff know of his commitment. Hauani’o also had offers to play at Army, Western New Mexico and Northern Arizona. “UH has been […]

By Billy Hull on November 25, 2015

‘Iolani senior Keoni-Kordell Makekau currently holds three Division I offers but is waiting to hopefully have more options before making his college choice. The 5-foot-10, 168-pound wide receiver, whose offer list consists of Navy, Washington State and Hawaii, took an official visit to Navy two weekends ago and found the school similar to his current high school. He attended the Midshipmen’s 55-14 win over SMU and somehow stayed warm despite taking only shorts with him on the trip. The temperature […]

Igber wishes Malepeai well in record chase

By Billy Hull on November 13, 2015

When Joe Igber visits Hawaii next month, it will be his first time home in five years. The 1999 ‘Iolani graduate, whose all-time career rushing record that has lasted 17 years is in danger tonight at Aloha Stadium, means no disrespect to Mililani’s Vavae Malepeai when he says he’s never heard of him. Truth be told, he couldn’t name a single player on ‘Iolani’s current roster and didn’t even know the ILH was split into divisions. Igber’s passions in life […]
