Stout ‘D’ keeps ‘Iolani close in loss to Clackamas

By Paul Honda on August 31, 2018

It was the kind of rarity that had to be seen to be believed, even against Oregon’s defending 6-A state champion. Clackamas, with five returning starters on defense, was dominant on that side of the ball. If not for that, things may have turned out differently for the visiting Cavaliers in a 7-0 win over ‘Iolani on Saturday afternoon. The Raiders didn’t have a single first down in the opening half. In fact, four possessions were three-and-out, and three more […]

No. 8 ‘Iolani right at home in Division I

By Billy Hull on August 18, 2018

Kaua Nishigaya‘s first year of varsity football included seven consecutive games against either Saint Louis, Kamehameha or Punahou. That was two years ago. Now, as an ‘Iolani senior, Nishigaya feels the Raiders are right where they’re supposed to be. “These past two years we’ve faced a lot of adversity and finally it’s going our way,” Nishigaya said after Friday night’s 33-12 win over Kailua at Alex Kane Stadium. “I think this is the correct division for us to play in.” […]

Q&A: ‘Iolani coach Wendell Look

By Paul Honda on August 17, 2018

The ‘Iolani Raiders are in a sweet spot. The reformation of merged schedule, a three-tiered format, finally has the Raiders in a place they can call home. For a long time, ‘Iolani was a Division 1.5 type of football program. Dominant at the D-II level, but lacking girth and depth at the then-top tier of D-I. With the current Open, D-I and D-II structure, ‘Iolani is off to a strong start in the middle division. The Raiders are 2-0 so […]

‘Iolani celebrates Father Bray Classic rout

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 11, 2018

This Father Bray Memorial Classic was unlike most of its 54 predecessors. A 55th annual celebration honoring the ‘Iolani football patriarch carried added importance for the Raiders, who opened their Division I regular-season schedule with a 55-14 rout of No. 9 Waipahu at Kozuki Stadium. “Usually there’s a celebratory atmosphere,” ‘Iolani coach Wendell Look said. “(But) we have to focus in and win the game. “We focused in on playing ‘Iolani football and making the past players, which there were […]
