On this day in 1959, Lyman Koike and Thomas Serikaku each banged out three hits and the Mid-Pacific baseball team beat Kaimuki 13-5. Herbert Nakasone took a two-hit shutout into the ninth inning before Kaimuki rallied to knock him out of the box. Before he became Hawaii’s athletic director, Young Suk Ko of McKinley was quite an athlete. He starred in football, basketball, baseball and track and field for the school while climbing up the ranks of the boy scouts. On this day in 1939, Ko put the shot 50 feet, 2 inches to break the record by more than five feet as McKinley won a track and field meet at Alexander Field. Three other records were broken that day. On this day in 2010, Katie Manuma limited Waianae to four hits and Campbell stayed perfect with a 5-1 win over the Seariders. Manuma also had two hits including a double. The Sabers lost their perfect mark with a loss to Leisha Liilii and Castle in the semifinals of the OIA playoffs when the Knights roughed up Manuma for six runs in 5 1/3 innings. Larry Khan-Smith is probably best known for his running exploits with the UH football team, but he made his mark on the state as a jumper. On this day in 1986, the boy who is still perhaps Campbell’s greatest athlete broke OIA records in the triple jump and long jump at Kaiser. On this day in 2003, former UH football star Joe Onosai agreed to coach his alma mater. Onosai took the reigns for Pac-Five, taking over for Don Botelho. He lasted only one season, and is still one of only two coaches to lead the program not named Botelho. Leon Schumacher was the coach in the program’s first year in 1973. On this day in 1992, Sani Apuakehau won the 100 meters and the long jump to propel Kamehameha to the ILH track and field championship over Punahou. Apuakehau ran the 100 meters in a disappointing 11.3 seconds and flew 21 feet, 2 1/4 inches in the long jump. APRIL 17, 1957: Donald Sakamoto throws no-hitter for Hilo

On this day in 1957, Donald Sakamoto threw a shortened no-hitter and Hilo beat rival St. Joseph’s for the BIIF South title. Sakamoto’s gem was called off because of rain in the fifth inning, but was deemed official. Sakamoto faced only 16 batters, walking one and allowing another to reach on an error. HHSAA pulls plug on spring sports season

After months of optimism and chewing on different scenarios, the HHSAA made it official today: The spring sports season has ended and will not be made up. The decision scraps eight state championships, which were supposed to begin with boys volleyball and girls water polo on May 4. Judo, tennis, softball, track and field, golf and baseball all will be scrapped.
