It might sound familiar, but on this day in 2001 the HHSAA was doing everything it could to save the state tournaments. Executive director Keith Amemiya didn’t have to worry about a global pandemic, just a teacher’s strike that wiped nearly out a month of the spring season. Sean Milan and Pearl City lost the game, but won the conversation. On this day in 2013, Milan pitched 10 innings but the Chargers lost to Kailua 2-1 in the OIA Red Quarterfinals. Surfriders coach Corey Ishigo called it ‘probably the best high school performance I’ve seen as coach in 14 years.’ Milan threw 141 pitches with 10 strikeouts and scattering six hits. On this day in 1995, Sean Murphy hit a three-run home run and Mid-Pacific beat Kamehameha 8-3 to throw the ILH race into its usual chaos. The victory created a three-way tie between Kamehameha, Mid-Pacific and Iolani at 15-4-1 with one game remaining in the season. Punahou was just one game behind them. APRIL 24, 1986: Hilo’s Shane Ogawa piles up strikeouts

On this day in 1986, Shane Ogawa struck out 15 batters and defending champion and top seed Hilo throttled Castle 7-0 in the second round of the state baseball tournament. Ogawa allowed only two hits (Both to Darren Oshiro) and pitched around three errors. Hilo’s state run ended with an 11-9 loss to Iolani the next day, and Ogawa had two hits and four RBIs. On this day in 2004, Paul Honda stepped out of his comfort zone to cover ILH sailing. Punahou won the title, the same as it had the previous year when the sport debuted as the only such high school competition in the country. The Buffanblu have dominated since.

APRIL 21, 1970: Public schools make their move

On this day in 1970, Hawaii’s public schools made a plan to even the playing field with their public school counterparts. The Interscholastic Conference of Hawaii was proposed for 1971, bringing all of the islands together under one umbrella. The plan included private schools providing they follow the rules of the organization, namely on recruiting and eligibility. APRIL 21, 1981: Saint Louis wins ILH baseball title after long wait

On this day in 1981, Saint Louis finally got over the hump to win an ILH baseball title. The Crusaders finished second three years in a row before breaking through for coach Eric Texidor. It was the program’s first league title since 1974 and it wouldn’t do it again until 1989. APRIL 21, 1969: ILH approves spring football

On this day in 1969, the ILH passed a rule allowing football programs to practice in the spring without helmets and pads. Programs were allowed to practice for 10 consecutive days in May. The league also decided to use National Federation rules to keep it in line with the other leagues in the state. The biggest change was not allowing a defensive player to advance the ball after recovering a fumble.
