MAY 11, 1979: Chris McLachlin steps down as Punahou hoops coach

On this date in 1979, Punahou lost one of its most successful basketball coaches for the second time in five years. Chris McLachlin, who took the Buffanblu to the state title a few months before, resigned to spend more time with his family. His son, future PGA pro Parker McLachlin, was born two days earlier. Chris McLachlin, a 1964 grad at the school, went 165-30 as Punahou’s basketball coach and won two state championships. Ray Buck replaced McLachlin as coach. […]

MAY 9, 1944: McKinley wins bizarre relay rematch

On this date in 1944, the Medley relay not only took the spotlight at the Cornell Relays, it was the only game in town. McKinley beat Punahou with Roosevelt third and Kamehameha fourth in the event, which was run by itself three days after the competition was over. MAY 9, 1955: Kaimuki’s George Hamasaki hits for cycle

On this day in 1955, Kaimuki and Roosevelt tested the limits of someone’s scorebook. The teams wrapped up the season by combining for 29 hits, 10 errors and nine walks in the Bulldogs’ 16-11 victory in two and a half hours. George Hamasaki was the big stick for Kaimuki, hitting for the cycle and driving in six runs. In all, the Bulldogs erupted for 22 hits.

MAY 9, 1964: Iolani rowers warm up for Olympic Trials

On this day in 1964, the Iolani rowing crew swept all four races of the ILH championship on Ala Wai Canal. The victory by the heavyweight crew qualified for the Olympic trials in New York. The Raiders lost out in its bid for the 1964 games with a sixth-place finish in a time of 6:55.4. Harvard won the race 25 seconds faster than Iolani. Baseball nearly every day couldn’t untie the knot in the OIA West. On this date in 2001, Shawn Benson threw a complete game and Pearl City beat Mililani 5-2 to cause a five-way tie for second place in the West. Campbell was the class of the group at 8-1. Mililani, Aiea, Pearl City, Waianae and Leilehua all finished 6-3 to leave OIA baseball coordinator Keith Morioka grasping at straws to figure out which three of the five would move on […]

On this date in 2013, Evan Enriques overcame injury to lead Kamehameha-Hawaii to a sweep of Kalaheo in the HHSAA boys volleyball tournament. The Warriors fell into an unseeded position after losing to Waiakea in the BIIF tournament, leaving them to face Punahou in the quarterfinal round. MAY 8, 1993: Kamehameha comes through without Nani Cockett

Other than “play ball,” there are no sweeter words in sports than “Game seven.” On this date in 1993, Kamehameha and Iolani hooked up for the seventh time, but this one was for the state girls basketball championship. The Warriors were without Nani Cockett for the telling contest, losing their all-star two weeks earlier because of injury. Her mates picked her up, though, beating the talented Raiders in overtime.
