Punahou ends 2018-19 with 12 state titles and more national recognition

Punahou hauled in six spring sports championships to double its previous total for the school year and finish with 12. The ILH captured 35 of 45 state team championships, and private schools (including a D-II title won by Hawaii Prep of the BIIF) accounted for 36 of the 45. ‘Iolani earned the second most 2018-19 state crowns with five, followed by Kamehameha and Hawaii Baptist (three in D-II and one in D-I) with four each. UPDATE: Five ongoing lawsuits involving Hawaii high school athletics

There are currently at least five lawsuits in the courts that have to do with Hawaii high school sports. Here are updates on each of them: KAISER >> A Kaiser football player’s parent, Gregory Tartamella, is going to court as the defendant in a jury trial. The charges are assault, terroristic threatening and harassment of now ex-football coach Arnold Martinez. The case stems partly from an incident in fall 2017 in which Tartamella was caught on video yelling at Martinez. […]

Private schools own 80 percent of state titles so far in 2018-19

Private schools have won 80 percent (24 of 30) of the state championships through the fall and winter seasons of 2018-19. And of those 24 private-school championships, 23 were by ILH schools and one by Hawaii Prep, a private school on the Big Island. State titles will be determined in 15 more sports this spring to conclude the school year. For all of 2017-18, private schools won 67 percent of the state titles (31 out of 46). HHSAA launches esports at Hawaii high schools this week

Twenty-three schools around the state will participate this week in the first esports competition under a pilot program developed by the Hawaii High School Athletic Association. According to a news release, the HHSAA has partnered with PlayVS for “Season Zero” of esports competition beginning Tuesday. Esports is basically an organized competition of different multiplayer video games. HMSA donates proven life savers to HHSAA

Thirteen years ago, the Hawaii Medical Service Association donated life-saving defibrillators to 95 public and independent schools statewide. They’re doing the same thing this year in collaboration with the Hawaii High School Athletic Association. The difference? Lives have been saved with that first batch of donated defibrillators (also known as automated external defebrillators) in 2006, so whatever doubts, if any, about their importance have been completely wiped away.
