HIADA tweaks state football format and adds instant replay

By Nick Abramo on June 6, 2019

Athletic directors approved the tweaking of the Hawaii high school state football tournament format at their annual legislative meeting Thursday afternoon. The vote in favor of two state tourney format proposals Thursday was 51-40 at the Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association at its annual legislative meeting at the Kauai Marriott Resort in Lihue. Both measures then moved on to receive final passage from the Hawaii High School Athletic Association executive board Thursday evening, also at the Marriott. The most likely […]

Football instant replay breezes through HIADA committee

By Nick Abramo on June 5, 2019

Instant replay review for the football state tournament is well on its way to becoming a reality. A proposal to incorporate replay for televised football state tournament games at Aloha Stadium passed through a Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association committee 33-0-4 Wednesday at the annual legislative meeting at the Kauai Marriott Resort. There are two more hurdles — Thursday morning’s general assembly vote and then a vote by the Hawaii High School Athletic Association executive board Thursday evening. Three other […]

PHOTO GALLERY: 2019 Hawaii Hall of Honor

By Paul Honda on June 4, 2019

From Faatui Tuitele‘s invocation to Felipe Ojastro‘s mostly polite interrogation of the 12 inductees to Kalina Obrey‘s outgoing thank-you message on behalf of the class of 2019, it was a memorable night. There was also Manti Te‘o‘s earthy speech, chock full of wisdom for the soon-to-be college athletes. When it was all done, the inductees stayed together, signing autographs for each other, yearbook style, on anything they could get their hands on. The Star-Advertiser Hall of Honor pages. 20 YEARS LATER: The Hawaii Hall of Honor class of 1999

By Nick Abramo on June 1, 2019

One major leaguer with two World Series championship rings. One Olympic silver medalist in water polo. One University of Hawaii volleyball superstar. St. Anthony baseball player Shane Victorino, Punahou water polo player Brandon Brooks and Kamehameha volleyball player Lily Kahumoku are just three of the 12 members selected to the 1999 Hawaii Hall of Honor. It was 20 years ago now and a fine time to look back at that banner year for the Hall of Honor. The Class of […]

A LOOK BACK: Every 2018-19 state championship

By Nick Abramo on May 28, 2019

St. Francis opened its doors to students in 1924 and is now at the end of the line. Next school year, there will be no St. Francis. The school’s athletic program, however, went out as winners. The Saints’ baseball, softball and boys volleyball teams won Division II state championships this spring. In the last state tournament of the 2018-19 season, St. Francis captured the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA Baseball State Championships in D-II with a 10-4 victory over Waimea at Lihue’s […]

Hawaii Grown: Jocelyn Alo not focused on anyone’s expectations but her own

By Christian Shimabuku on May 22, 2019

Perhaps the only downside of the sensational freshman year Jocelyn Alo had at Oklahoma was how remarkably high it set the bar for year two. Last season, Alo led the nation with 30 home runs while hitting .420 and a team-high 72 RBI, and was awarded with National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American honors. She was also named Freshman of the Year by both the NFCA and Big 12 Conference. Fans across the country eagerly wondered what she would do for an […]

Hall of Honor 3-sport athletes have been in decline

By Nick Abramo on May 18, 2019

Three-sport athletes making the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Hall of Honor used to be a common thing. Not so much these days. The Hall of Honor started in 1983 and four times between then and 1999 there were eight or more three-sport athletes inducted. The discrepancy between three-sport athletes and one-sport athletes was wide in the following years: 1985 (8-1), 1987 (7-0), 1989 (6-0), 1991 (9-0), 1993 (9-0), 1994 (7-0), 1995 (7-1) and 1999 (9-0). In 2015, there were […]

Ratio of girls to boys in Hall of Honor has increased through the years

By Nick Abramo on May 18, 2019

It used to be that the Hawaii High School Athletic Association’s Hall of Honor inducted more boys athletes than girls. It’s trending the other way now. A graph put together by the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s and Hawaii Prep World’s Jerry Campany illustrates the change. In 1983, the first year of the Hall, there were nine boys athletes and three girls picked in the 12-member class. That’s a long way from from 2018, when the numbers were exactly reversed, with nine girls […]
