ON THIS DATE: Frank Manalili puts clamps on Ka’u

By Jerry Campany on March 26, 2020

It appears coaches on the Big Island were ahead of their time as far as analytics go. On this day in 1963, St. Joseph pitcher Frank Manalili limited Ka’u to a single hit in a 7-2 victory. It was one of three wins for the senior, against four losses, but he was still judged the best right-handed pitcher at the end of the season. In the pivotal South Division of the BIIF, Manalili helped deal the Cowboys their first loss, […]

ON THIS DATE: Kamehameha beats McKinley in 25 innings

By Jerry Campany on March 25, 2020

Perhaps nobody told McKinley’s Martin Borja that baseball games are not supposed to go 25 innings. On this date in 1967, Kamehameha beat McKinley 9-7 in 25 innings at Honolulu Stadium. Borja pitched 24 2/3 innings in the six hour, 12-minute affair only to lose. He faced more than 100 batters in the game, allowing 14 hits and walking 11. McKinley committed 10 errors, so Borja allowed only four earned runs in his 25 2/3 innings. The effort is still […]

ON THIS DATE: Jimmy Kneubuhl breaks record that stands forever

By Jerry Campany on March 24, 2020

When Punahou’s Andrei Iosivas wowed the crowd with five gold medals at the state track and field championships two years ago, nobody had seen anything like it. But part of that hype came because fellow Buffanblu Jimmy Kneubuhl was so far before their time. On this date in 1934, Kneubuhl won five golds in an ILH track and field meet before a crowd of 3,000 at Alexander Field, breaking the mark in the 440 with a 49.1-second effort. Thanks in […]

ON THIS DATE: Nathan Aipa leads Iolani to upset of Saint Louis

By Jerry Campany on March 23, 2020

From its inception in 1909 to the present day, every game during the ILH baseball season seems to matter.  Iolani’s Nathan Aipa struggled on the mound but made up for it with his bat as the Raiders knocked Saint Louis from the unbeaten ranks on this date in 1972. Aipa went the opposite way for a single to score Howard Araki and Dean Okimoto in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Raiders upset Saint Louis 9-8 at ‘Iolani’s […]

ON THIS DATE: Radford’s Reed Anderson makes himself known

By Jerry Campany on March 22, 2020

On this date in 1986, Radford’s Reed Anderson did his best to ensure a newspaper would never spell his name wrong again. Anderson climbed the mound at Aloha Stadium and shut out Mililani over nine innings, only to wake up to find his first name misspelled in the Honolulu Advertiser’s account of the game.  Anderson and batterymate Raul Benitez limited Mililani to two hits and two walks, striking out seven. The only times the Trojans cracked him were a first-inning […]

ON THIS DATE: Farrington wins boys basketball semifinal

By Jerry Campany on March 20, 2020

With the world at war following the Pearl Harbor attack, Saint Louis and Farrington’s boys teams had their own battles on the basketball court. On this day in 1943, the Crusaders stole an 18-17 thriller from McKinley and The Governors beat Kamehameha 35-14. That set up a winner-take-all matchup three days later. McKinley led Saint Louis 10-8 at halftime before the Cardinals leaned on Henry Van Giesen to make the difference. Van Giesen hit a free throw with two minutes […]

ON THIS DATE: Saint Louis shocks field at Cornell Relays

By Jerry Campany on March 19, 2020

Lane assignments for the Cornell Relays at Kamehameha were drawn at the YMCA on March 19, 1931, with Bill Wise‘s Kamehameha crew the heavy favorite but Saint Louis expected to threaten them. Other schools entered included Punahou, McKinley and Saint Louis. The meet, which had been held every year since 1913, was much hyped in the newspaper, with stories advancing it every day until the action began with sports writers picking Kamehameha to beat Saint Louis by three points. When […]

ON THIS DATE: Radford track and field team is preseason favorite

By Jerry Campany on March 18, 2020

As Jim Easterwood proclaimed in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, 1969 was the year of the Ram. Easterwood’s proclamation came after talking to OIA track and field coaches, with Castle’s Don Mahi claiming that the Rams had too many horses to be challenged by anyone other than possibly Kailua. The Rams were led that year by sprinters John Brown, who ran a 9.9 in Texas, and Bernard Rembert (10.1) with Allan Overby and Jerris White providing depth. Radford had already won the […]
