APRIL 3, 1998: Farrington’s Robynn Afe scores 29 in loss to Kahuku

On this date in 1998, the Kahuku girls basketball team proved that a balanced approach can overcome even the brightest star. Nine different Red Raiders scored points and Kahuku beat Farrington 49-45 despite Robynn Afe’s 29 points — 22 in the second half. Neither team was a match for Kalaheo for the OIA title but Kahuku made it to states where it lost both games, 67-59 to Konawaena and 34-29 to Waipahu. On this date in 1955, Roosevelt was the team to beat in every event in track and field. Tiki Vasconcellos‘ Rough Riders won 11 of 12 events and set seven records in meet the public schools championship. Their success wasn’t limited to public schools, though, as Roosevelt went on to sweep the Cornell Relays and Prep Championship later in the year. Punahou finished second in both.

On this date in 2013, The Punahou softball team went to the small ball to beat Kama Dung and Kamehameha. Heaven Wong and Sara Sumida reached on infield singles and Thalen Masada reached on an error before Kylie Popovitch squeezed in the go-ahead run in the fifth. The seeds of KIF baseball were planted early.  On this day in 1913, John Bush‘s Koloa team hosted Eleele School for a game and lost 12-6 in front of ‘a large and appreciative’ crowd. Principal Morse of Eleele joined the traveling party and tried to set up a rematch. On this date in 1991, the Pearl City baseball team overcame a three-run deficit to beat Mililani 6-3 to win the OIA West with a perfect 10-0 record.  Brent Furuyama won his fourth game of the season by allowing seven hits with five walks and six strikeouts. As a rare four-year starting pitcher, Kaimuki’s Arthur Oshita was denied his chance to win an OIA or state championship as a senior. On this day in 1975, Oshita appeared to be well on his way with a 3-2 win over Kalani. For one sunny day, Waianae defensive back James Woodard reigned as the greatest sprinter in OIA varsity history. On this date in 1980, Woodard ran the 100 meters in 10.9 seconds during the OIA West championships at Moanalua. It established a record in the event, but so did the winner of every other running race. On this date in 1992, Tyra Padello scored six of her 13 points in the third quarter to erase a halftime deficit and Kaimuki beat Farrington 48-40 to clinch the OIA East title with an 8-1 record. Farrington fought back to trail 42-40 with 50 seconds left on a field goal by Christina Afe but got no closer.
