By Jerry Campany on April 17, 2020

For all aspiring baseball players who look over the expanses of Joey DeSa Field and imagine hitting a ball to the farthest reaches of center field, know this: Former Farrington star Ron Ramie has been there. On this day in 1961, Ramie hit a 400-foot home run and John Matias added two more dingers as Farrington beat Kalani 12-2. The Governors did the damage against Dick Watkins, who was one of the premier pitchers in the league and led the […]

APRIL 16, 1963: Flo Galinato of Saint Louis keeps hitting

By Jerry Campany on April 16, 2020

Pay no attention to the small sample size, Flo Galinato of Saint Louis was always near the top of the ILH’s batting leaders. On this day in 1963, all of the games were rained out so it provided an opportunity for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin to run batting and pitching leaders. Galinato ended the season third that year with a .458 average, behind Gordon Shimizu of Farrington and Kalani’s Mike Lum. They both hit .500 but Shimizu had 12 more at […]

By Jerry Campany on April 16, 2020

Cabbab was one year short of seeing his dream realized. Damien began playing baseball […]

On this date in 1998, the 14-year old freshman defended her No. 1 seed and won the state tennis championship for Punahou. Junior Ryan Lee won the boys tournament to give the Buffanblu their 25th girls title and 20th boys crown. Kaneshiro repeated her state title as a sophomore but fell short as […]

APRIL 15, 1952: Frank Reveira of Saint Louis lives up to the hype

By Jerry Campany on April 15, 2020

You could see it coming. On this day in 1952, Frank Reveira collected three hits and drove in four runs as Saint Louis beat McKinley 19-1 in an ILH baseball game. Reviera, a freshman catcher, had sportswriters and scouts all atwitter over his future, with the Star-Bulletin’s Carl Machado writing that Reviera ‘is destined to become one of the Crusaders’ all-time greats.’ Reveira proved Machado right, in a sense, being named first-team ILH for the first three seasons of his […]
