Na Menehune abound at Sony Open

By Jason Kaneshiro on January 10, 2017

As the sixth Hawaii player to qualify for this week’s Sony Open in Hawaii, Tadd Fujikawa was understandably gratified to earn a return to Waialae Country Club. Then he was reminded that three of those local entrants graduated from Moanalua. “OK, that’s really cool,” Fujikawa said, flashing that familiar wide smile. “To see so many guys from Moanalua playing well, we’ve all had our ups and downs and to step forward and make a name for ourselves is really special.” […]

By Nick Abramo on May 2, 2016

Allisen Corpuz took a 2-shot lead over Punahou teammate Mariel Galdiano on Monday in the girls portion of the David S. Ishii Foundation State Golf Championships at Wailua Golf Course on Kauai. Corpuz was a runner-up to Galdiano — who has won three state crowns in a row — a year ago and finished third three years ago as a freshman. Corpuz went 35-35—70 and is 2 under. Galdiano is at even par, with two girls — Lorraine Char of Kamehameha and […]

Chin remains steady on winning putt (+ videos)

By Nick Abramo on April 21, 2016

Punahou’s Andrew Chin has been a successful Interscholastic League of Honolulu golfer for three years now. He placed third in the league championship as a freshman and seventh as a sophomore. As a junior? Well, on Thursday he broke through by hanging on for a victory over Kyle Suppa at the Turtle Bay Fazio Course. Chin now has the title of ILH champion, and he deserved it after the way he braved the final hole in front of a modest […]

Moanalua golfers want to go a step further

By Nick Abramo on April 20, 2016

Moanalua is proud of its 10 straight Oahu Interscholastic Association golf championships, but some of the players want to get that ultimate prize, the state team title. Na Menehune hasn’t done that since 2012, when the team’s current crop of seniors were in eighth grade. “Every year, our main goal is to win the state championship,” said junior Jun Ho Won, the medalist in the OIA individual championship and a big part of the team crown that Moanalua captured on […]

Nam loses by 1 despite ‘pure’ shot (+ videos)

By Nick Abramo on April 20, 2016

Poor Malia Nam. The Kaiser golfer placed second and was unable to defend her Oahu Interscholastic Association golf championship on Wednesday at Turtle Bay. Instead, Miki Manta —— the girl from rival Kalani —— won by a stroke. And this happened, in part, because Nam, in a sense, hit her approach “too good” on the finishing ninth at the Fazio Course. Yes indeed. Nam hit the 145-yard shot so good, she felt it. She called it “pure” after the round. So […]

Moanalua continues OIA golf dominance

By Jerry Campany on April 19, 2016

A decade of dominance. The Moanalua boys golf team won its 10th straight OIA championship on Tuesday at Turtle Bay, crowning its fourth straight individual champion. Jun Ho Won is the latest recipient for Na Menehune, outlasting teammates Kyosuke Hara and Shawn Lu. Hara took the title last year with Brent Grant winning the year before that. John Oda won in 2012 and 2013. Moanalua has had a boy finish first or second every year during the streak except in […]
