Video: #3 Punahou at #4 ‘Iolani

By Paul Honda on October 4, 2013

Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Currently uploading I don’t dare say a best-of-three match can possibly be an instant classic. I don’t. There have been too many incredible battles on the hardwood in best-of-fives. But this? Especially the first set, this is what great volleyball competition and rivalry are about. Some of the best rallies I’ve seen this season, even in a long time. And to see it in a great environment was icing on the cake. […]

OIA volleyball playoffs set

By Billy Hull on October 3, 2013

The OIA volleyball regular season has come to an end as the West division completed its final matches of the year on Wednesday night. The biggest winner of the evening was Waianae, which won an elimination game by knocking off Campbell in three sets to secure the West’s sixth and final berth in the OIA Red playoffs. The Seariders (4-6) will open next week against Farrington (8-3), the No. 3 seed out of the East. Mililani, ranked No. 5 in […]

OIA East volleyball seeds decided

By Billy Hull on October 2, 2013

Two upsets highlighted the final night of regular-season play in the OIA Red East on Tuesday as Kalani took down No. 6 Moanalua in three sets while Kaiser swept No. 9 Farrington. Kahuku (No. 1), Moanalua (No. 2), and Farrington (No. 3) entered Tuesday with its seeds already determined. Castle, Kalani and Kaiser were all tied at 6-4 as they played for the last three seeds. The Knights controlled their own destiny for the fourth seed (due to wins over […]

OIA volleyball playoffs take shape

By Billy Hull on October 1, 2013

The six teams advancing to the OIA Red playoffs out of the East have already been decided. The only thing up for grabs during tonight’s final regular season slate of games is who will get to host a match in the first round of the double-elimination tournament. Kahuku (10-0) and Moanalua (9-1) have already secured first-round byes with Farrington (8-2) locked into the third seed and an opening-round match at home against the West’s No. 6 seed when the playoffs […]

Video: #3 Kahuku at #6 Moanalua

By Paul Honda on October 1, 2013

Part 1 Part 2 Moanalua? Good team. They’ve got defense, hitters, passers. But Kahuku, with their bombers outside, is just too powerful for the rest of the OIA, I’m guessing, at least for now. One of Kamehameha’s players told me that Kahuku is right there at the same level as the state’s elite teams. Now that I’ve seen them, it’s true. The Lady Raiders have the power.

No. 3 Kahuku dominates OIA showdown

By Billy Hull on September 27, 2013

Kahuku more than validated its No. 3 ranking in the latest Star-Advertiser girls volleyball top 10 poll on Thursday night. If anything, the Red Raiders showed they, not Punahou, are the team with the best shot at knocking off unanimous No. 1 Kamehameha come state tournament time. While the Warriors have ripped through the ILH, the Red Raiders hadn’t been tested in league play until Thursday night’s OIA Red East showdown against No. 6 Moanalua, which like Kahuku, was 9-0 […]

Video: #1 Kamehameha at #2 Punahou

By Paul Honda on September 26, 2013

Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Over the years, Punahou and Kamehameha have provided huge highlights, great volleyball and excellent entertainment for fans. And that’s just in the regular season. This rematch again went to the Warriors in a two-set sweep. Right now, the Warriors are the clear-cut best team in the state, deep, focused, talented and unselfish. All the markings of a champion. Yet, it ain’t over. There have been a number of ILH runners-up in volleyball, […]

Kamehameha spikers 11th in nation

By Paul Honda on September 25, 2013

The latest MaxPreps Xcellent 25 National Volleyball Rankings are out and the Kamehameha Warriors have landed at No. 11. Kamehameha toppled some heavyweights over the weekend at the Durango Volleyball Classic. Wins over Horizon (Ariz.) and Archbishop Mitty (Calif.) vaulted the Warriors into the tourney final, where they lost to Torrey Pines (Calif.). In last week’s poll, Horizon was No. 5 and Mitty was No. 25. (In the PrepVolleyball.com rankings, Horizon and Mitty were third and fifth, respectively.) Torrey Pines […]
