The little green team that could

By Paul Honda on December 10, 2013

It may seen tardy, but I’ve got a drive full of semi-old photos that need to be posted. It’s not for everybody. But for the kids in green who are in these pics, the memories are priceless. Konawaena, an underdog in the Division II state volleyball tournament, ultimately triumphed. The Wildcats topped another BIIF program, Hawaii Prep, 25-16, 24-26, 25-18, 25-21. I got to see them in the semifinal round — a sweep of Waimea — and their cohesion and […]

Moanalua, Punahou rule the beach

By Paul Honda on November 26, 2013

Sand volleyball, or beach volleyball, is not far away from becoming a state championship sport. HHSAA executive director Christopher Chun said the ball is literally in the hands of the leagues. If and when there are at least three leagues competing in the sport, it can be drawn up for state-championship sanctioning by the HHSAA. Chun said he would fully support that measure. For now, Moanalua’s boys and Punahou’s girls are the unofficial state champions. Skylan Engleman and Austin Amian […]

Molina, a Star-Advertiser all-state Fab 15 selection as a freshman last year, has been offered a basketball scholarship by the Rainbow Wahine. UH coach Laura Beeman talked with Molina during last weekend’s Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic. “It was amazing. I heard how she changed the whole program in one year,” Molina said of Beeman. “She came up […]

By Paul Honda on November 13, 2013

Eight volleyball players and eight baseball players were among the signees at the Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance letter-of-intent signing event this morning at Elks Lodge Waikiki. In all, 29 student-athletes signed letters, including record-breaking swimmer Jasmine Mau of Punahou. The senior chose Cal, and the setting for her official decision could not have been more appropriate. It was at the Elks Lodge, as a 3-year-old, where Mau learned to swim. Two-time girls singles tennis state champion Alyssa Tobita of Mililani […]

Blake takes place among the best

By Jerry Campany on November 2, 2013

In a season that had two of the top programs — Kahuku and Punahou — break in new coaches, it took familiarity to take the title. Kamehameha’s Chris Blake won his seventh girls championship on Friday night, tying Dan Kitashima of Kamehameha. Kitashima won his first in 1994 and his last one in 1999, going an astounding 243-20 in his career. Blake helped Kitashima win five of them as an assistant. Blake is a mere 206-24. Blake spent three years […]
