Kahuku takes a tumble

By Jerry Campany on September 22, 2014

Kahuku football coach Lee Leslie had to know that his first season at the school wouldn’t come without a little bit of adversity. No football team ever goes through an entire campaign without at least one quiet ride home wondering where everything went wrong. Leslie took his first loss in Hawaii on Friday when his powerful offense gave the ball away seven times in a loss to Kaiser. Add in problems with the clock on the Cougars’ final drive and […]

‘Iolani tries to pinpoint key to breakthrough

By Nick Abramo on September 17, 2014

After Punahou’s 25-21, 25-17 ILH girls volleyball win over ‘Iolani on Wednesday, Raiders coach Kainoa Obrey said he “can’t put a finger” on the exact reason his team typically comes so close but is yet so far away from beating the Buffanblu. “Our kids are smart,” he said. “They know they need to work on finishing sets. Overall, I’m happy they stayed aggressive throughout. When it gets to the 20-point area (of a set against top teams), I don’t know […]

Defending champs still kings of the hill

By Jerry Campany on September 15, 2014

To many poll voters, you have to beat the best to be the best. With so few meaningful games so far in the fall season, defending state champions in football and volleyball have kept their holds on the top spot in the Star-Advertiser’s polls. Punahou remains No. 1 in football while Kamehameha keeps the top spot in volleyball. Both teams have held those spots all season. Star-Advertiser football poll: 1. Punahou, 2. Mililani, 3. Kahuku, 4. Kamehameha, 5. Farrington, 6. […]

OIA football games moved up a half hour

By Nick Abramo on September 2, 2014

Oahu Interscholastic Association football start times will be a half-hour earlier on Friday nights, starting on Sept. 12, the league announced. The matter was discussed at the OIA office at Radford High School on Tuesday during the monthly athletic directors’ meeting. So far this season, the Friday game times have been 6 p.m. for junior varsity, with varsity to follow. With this change, the JV games on Friday will begin at 5:30 p.m. The change is not effective for this […]

Punahou looking for another Kang crown

By Jerry Campany on August 14, 2014

Despite a stacked field, the Ann Kang Volleyball Invitational championship goes through Punahou. The Buffanblu are going for their third straight tournament title this year, trying to match Mira Costa in 2002-2004 as the only team to three-peat. Punahou has not lost a match in Iolani’s preseason tilt since the 2009 championship against Redondo Union, winning all eight of its matches the last two years and dropping only two sets. This year’s field features five of the top 10 teams […]

Hallums commits to Gonzaga

By Paul Honda on May 9, 2014

Tiyana Hallums is on her way to Gonzaga. Well, not just yet. Soon enough, though, the Kamehameha junior will fly to the Northwest, where the Bulldogs could use her skills anywhere on the court. “This seems like the perfect fit. I don’t know what any other school can offer me to change my mind. They’ll let me play outside, which is completely rare since I’m a short outside,” said Hallums, who says she is “5-8 with shoes on.” Hallums was […]

Faumui to hoop up in Texas

By Paul Honda on May 7, 2014

Farrington senior Penina Faumui will play basketball at powerhouse Blinn College next season. Faumui is a Star-Advertiser All-State Fab 15 selection, a multi-skilled player who can play guard and forward. Blinn, a community college in Brenham, Texas, reached the quarterfinals of the national junior college (NJCAA) women’s basketball championship in March. The Buccaneers were ranked No. 12 in NJCAA Division I women’s basketball prior to the tourney. Blinn (28-7) averaged 82.6 points per game and was 15-3 in Region XIV […]

Shaking things up (extended version)

By Paul Honda on March 11, 2014

(The shorter version of this story was published this morning in the Star-Advertiser.) Ask Tehani Fiatoa about coaching. She’ll tell you it’s a labor of love. At the prep level, it’s rarely about money, at least in Hawaii.  The girls volleyball coach also tell you what she thinks of one-year contracts. For Fiatoa, better known as Tehani Miyashiro during her playing days at the University of Hawaii, it’s not just the concept of a one-year agreement that has been in […]
