Pollsters split on Kahuku and Farrington

By Jerry Campany on October 6, 2014

Go ahead and put them in different divisions, conversation always comes down to Kahuku and Farrington anyway. After showing their stuff in Saturday’s Aloha Stadium doubleheader, the Governors and Red Raiders are tied for fifth in the Star-Advertiser’s latest football poll. It might not be decided until the OIA semifinals if they get that far. Farrington plays the winner between Aiea and Waianae while Kahuku gets either Kapolei or Castle. Should they both win, they would meet before the OIA […]

‘Iolani plays great, Kamehameha still wins

By Paul Honda on October 1, 2014

Sometimes, it takes absolute perfection to knock off the No. 1 team in the state. ‘Iolani probably understands this. The fourth-ranked Raiders were outstanding defensively and still fell at Kamehameha’s house, 25-21, 25-23 on Tuesday night. Kamehameha hit .245. ‘Iolani finished at .216. The Raiders had just one hitting error and one service error in the second set, and still couldn’t topple the mighty Warriors.  Punahou will visit Kamehameha on Saturday in a high noon showdown as the home-and-away first […]

Lia Gaogao: Change for the better (extended)

By Paul Honda on September 30, 2014

(Here’s the extended version of this morning’s feature story on Moanalua senior volleyball player Lia Gaogao.) Change is good, even if it takes a lot of work. That’s what Silerolia “Lia” Gaogao knows well enough. She was part of a promising group of volleyball standouts at Maryknoll four years ago, but when the school opted to go in another direction, talent dispersed across the island. Gaogao and her heavy-ball rockets wound up at Moanalua with coach Tommy Lake, where she […]

‘Iolani to visit Moanalua for exhibition

By Jerry Campany on September 25, 2014

It could be the true state semifinal. The top four teams in the Star-Advertiser’s girls volleyball poll will play each other tonight when No. 1 Kamehameha visits No. 2 Punahou for a conference match and No. 3 ‘Iolani travels to meet No. 4 Moanalua in a benefit. The ILH only gets two teams into the state tournament, often leaving ‘Iolani out. The Raiders have not played in the tournament since 2007, the last time their league was awarded three berths. […]
