Le Jardin advances with upset of Konawaena

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 30, 2015

Built on the site of the former Kailua Drive-In, Le Jardin Academy provided a stunning plot twist in the Division II state girls volleyball tournament on Thursday. In the program’s first state tournament appearance, the Bulldogs — who began the season with just seven players on the varsity roster — earned a spot among the final four teams still in pursuit of the Division II title with an upset of top-seeded Konawaena. Le Jardin, the ILH runner up, advanced to face […]

Kamehameha’s Peleras is vital cog

By Nick Abramo on October 29, 2015

Shiloh Peleras is a weapon in the middle for the Kamehameha girls volleyball team. Warriors coach Chris Blake smiled and nodded approvingly when a media member called the senior “a weapon and a half” after Thursday night’s 3-0 sweep of third-seeded King Kekaulike in the quarterfinals of the Division I state tournament. “She’s real physical,” Blake said. “Our middles Shiloh and (senior) Brooke Ka‘awa have to be watched (by the opponents). They give our team that option (in the middle) […]

Q & A: Kamehameha VB coach Chris Blake

By Paul Honda on October 29, 2015

Before his day begins as head of the math department and teacher of all things Physics at Kamehameha, Chris Blake allowed us to pick his mind. The Warriors coach saw his team sweep Mililani on Wednesday night in the opening round of the New City Nissan/HHSAA Girls Volleyball State Championships. HPW: Good morning, Coach Chris. Any thoughts on last night’s match? Chris Blake: I got to see the video. HPW: Is there anything you saw and thought, whoa, I didn’t […]

By Jerry Campany on October 25, 2015

Much has been made about ‘Iolani ending its drought at the New City Nissan/HHSAA Girls Volleyball State Championships, but the brackets released on Sunday represent a new day in the ILH. Sure, Kamehameha and Hawaii Baptist are there as always, but the Eagles are joined by Le Jardin and Damien in the Division II bracket. Those two schools broke through this year, the first time they have ever played on the big stage. Iolani tops the big bracket, with Moanalua, […]

VIDEO: Iolani wins ILH volleyball

By Jerry Campany on October 24, 2015

Iolani punched its ticket to states for the first time since 2007 earlier this year. On Saturday, it added its first ILH title since 2001 with a win over Kamehameha. It touched off a celebration rarely seen in that gym.

Kamehameha digs a tunnel to title match

By Nick Abramo on October 24, 2015

The two liberos were front and center in the amazing dig-fest at the Hawaii Baptist gym on Friday night. But those two liberos just led that charge. Everyone else had a hand (pun intended) in it. It’s an exaggeration, of course, to say that hardly any volleyballs hit the floor during the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I girls second-round championship match between Kamehameha and Punahou. But if you were there watching the hitters pound away and the defensive specialists […]

Punahou will miss the party

By Jerry Campany on October 24, 2015

For the first time in more than a decade, the defending state Division I volleyball champion will not get a chance to defend its title on the court. Kamehameha beat Punahou in five sets on Friday night, robbing the Buffanblu of the chance. Punahou started the season No. 1 in the Star-Advertiser’s poll and held the spot for a month before losing to Mililani. It is the first time since Punahou’s 2004 title team that the reigning champions will have […]
