Kekauoha and grandfather share a special bond

By Nick Abramo on November 29, 2015

One of Moea Kekauoha‘s best volleyball traits is that she’s good at everything on the court —— hitting from the front row, hitting from the back row, digging, serving, passing and not making many mistakes. The senior was voted by coaches around the state to the No. 3 ranking in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Fab 15 that was released Sunday. It’s not a big surprise that Kakeauoha’s volleyball exploits have been at ‘Iolani, where her grandfather, Bernie Ching, has been a […]

‘Iolani girls recount their marvelous season

By Nick Abramo on November 29, 2015

It was a joyous occasion for ‘Iolani when it clinched a girls volleyball state-tournament berth at midseason. The Raiders, who went on to take the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I championship, hadn’t been to the states since 2007. Despite going 4-1 in regular-season and playoff games against Kamehameha, the Raiders fell short of winning it all to the Warriors in a five-set state-final showdown at Blaisdell Arena on Oct. 31. When next season rolls around, ‘Iolani will still be […]

Choy named ILH volleyball player of the year

By Jerry Campany on November 19, 2015

Iolani’s Bailey Choy and Kainoa Obrey fell short of their goal of a state title, but they were reminded today that an ILH title was nothing to shrug off. Choy was named the ILH player of the year in division I and Obrey was selected coach of the year in voting by the league’s coaches. Choy, a senior, was joined by Kamehameha junior Kayla Afoa and seven other seniors on the first team. Those players are Iolani’s Kaley Buscher and […]

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 30, 2015

It’s probably been a hectic couple of weeks around the Choy household. In his first season coaching the Farrington girls volleyball team, Barney Choy led the Governors to the OIA Division II title while his daughter, ‘Iolani senior Bailey Choy, helped the Raiders capture their first ILH championship since 2001 last week. The Division I and II state tournament schedules separated them this week, but they’ll finish the season in the same arena on Saturday. Farrington will play in the […]
