Kahuku is No. 1 in volleyball as well

Football isn’t the only sport Kahuku is excelling at. The Red Raiders’ girls volleyball team looks like a legitimate contender for a state championship this season as evidenced by a 25-23, 21-25, 25-22 victory over preseason-No. 1 Kamehameha on Saturday at the Kamehameha Invitational. You want some fun? Kahuku head coach Mounia Tachibana has the sport for you, then. No surprise there … it’s volleyball. Volleyball tournaments continue this week

With the Ann Kang Invitational and Waimea tournaments in the books, the state turns its eyes to this week’s Hawaii Volleyball Invitational at Kamehameha and Lee Ann DeLima Volleyball Classic hosted by Kamehameha-Maui. The 13th edition of the Hawaii Volleyball Invitational runs for three days with the final scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m. Six of the top 10 teams in the Star-Advertiser’s poll will be in action, including three of the top four. Ann Kang Invitational wraps up Saturday

Defending champion Santa Margarita is in position to repeat at the Ann Kang Invitational. The California school finished the second day of the tournament 6-0 without losing a set, the only school to do so. Mira Costa also went 6-0, but dropped two sets. Southlake Carroll is third with a 5-1 record entering today’s final day. Hawaii schools slipped a bit at the tournament, with Iolani falling to both Edison and Kahuku in three sets to drop to 4-2. ‘Iolani unbeaten at Ann Kang

Hawaii’s best girls volleyball teams had a rough day at the first day of ‘Iolani’s Ann Kang Invitational on Thursday. Sure, the Raiders defended their home court all three times they played, but their fellow Hawaii schools combined to go 6-12. ‘Iolani swept Los Alamitos, Kingwood and Sage Hill, with only one of them earning more than 20 points in a set. Volleyball season doesn’t start in Hawaii until league play begins later this month, but those familiar battles might be cake compared to the preseason tournament schedule. Five of the top 10 teams in the Star-Advertiser’s preseason poll are in action this week at the Ann Kang Invitational, trying to measure themselves against each other with a solid mainland field joining them. Ann Kang volleyball tournament field set

The annual Ann Kang Invitational girls volleyball tournament field in August is set. Oahu teams are host ‘Iolani, ‘Iolani I-AA, Hawaii Baptist Academy, Kahuku, Le Jardin, Moanalua and Punahou. Mainland teams are Boswell (Fort Worth, Texas), Edison (California), Kingwood (Houston), Los Alamitos (California), Mira Costa (Calif.), Newport Harbor (Newport Beach, Calif.), Sage Hill (Newport Coast, Calif.), Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) and Southlake (Southlake Texas). The tournament will run Aug. 11-13 at the ‘Iolani gyms.

Enterprise Hall Pass: Emma Taylor
