Hawaii volleyball players span the country

Wednesday’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser will include a Hawaii Grown section listing all 56 Division I girls volleyball players from Hawaii high schools currently playing on the mainland. Missouri’s Carly Kan, a four-year starter for the Tigers, is profiled. Kan played for a team that went 35-1 in her freshman season and is currently 9-3 heading into the start of SEC play on Wednesday night hosting South Carolina. Kahuku takes eighth at Durango Classic

The Kahuku girls volleyball team finished eighth at the Durango Fall Classic in Las Vegas this weekend. With all eyes on the football team, the Lady Raiders beat St. Ignatius 23-25, 25-21 before losing to eventual third-place finisher Santa Margarita 25-14, 25-18. Kahuku lost its next two matches but still finished eighth. Senior setter ShaRae Niu was the only Hawaii player named to the All-Tournament team, and just one of two setters. Kahuku, Kamehameha land in national Top 100

Kahuku, the No. 1 team in the Star-Advertiser Girls Volleyball Top 10, is ranked No. 53 nationally by PrepVolleyball.com. The rankings were released on Thursday. Kamehameha, ranked No. 2 here, is ranked right behind Kahuku at No. 54. Kahuku defeated Kamehameha during nonconference play recently. The Hawaii teams didn’t do anything to hurt their national rankings on Friday at the Durango Classic in Las Vegas. Local teams descend on Durango tournament

The Kahuku football team isn’t the only local squad looking to make a statement in Las Vegas this weekend. The Red Raiders’ girls volleyball team, which is ranked No. 1 in the Star-Advertiser’s poll, begins play at the Durango Fall Classic on Friday. Sacred Hearts’ Santos commits to DePaul

Shayla-Ann Santos, a senior outside hitter for Sacred Hearts, has accepted a volleyball scholarship to play for DePaul University, according to Lancers athletic director Ryan Hogue. Santos is the sister of Shawna-Lei Santos, who starred at Sacred Hearts before going on to have an outstanding four-year career at St. John’s University from 2012 to 2015. Kahuku’s Grace will play VB at Utah

Kahuku senior middle Phoebe Grace has accepted a scholarship to play at the University of Utah, Red Raiders head coach Mounia Tachibana confirmed Friday. Tachibana said Grace began to get offers during her sophomore season and is a solid commit to the Utes. Grace helped lead Kahuku to the semifinals of the Division I state tournament a year ago.
