Schutte’s specialty and Masaki’s moxie

By Nick Abramo on October 13, 2016

Syenna Masaki is the unquestioned leader of the Kalaheo Mustangs in girls volleyball. Keisha Schutte is a well-rounded player for the Campbell Sabers. There were others who also shined during the Mustangs’ three-set victory over the Sabers in the first round of the Oahu Interscholastic Association playoffs on Wednesday night at the Aiea High gym, but those two stood out for different reasons. Masaki is easy to spot. She is vocal and she is a big hitter. When setter Riley […]

LJA’s Under Dogs: From Koolaus to Cali

By Paul Honda on October 6, 2016

The rising program at Le Jardin Academy has become a presence in the prep volleyball world. While most fans statewide are starting to get acquainted with the school that rests in a picture-perfect spot at the foot of the Koolau Mountain Range in Kailua, the Bulldogs are in the Star-Advertiser Girls Volleyball Top 10 — at No. 9 — once again. That’s what a two-set sweep of perennial Division II state champion Hawaii Baptist can do. The Bulldogs are in […]

By Hawaii Prep World on October 5, 2016

The 2016 OIA girls volleyball playoffs are set. Here’s a schedule with dates and times with a few notes. >> Kahuku and Moanalua have been the top two seeds out of the East every year since 2011, when Kaiser took Kahuku’s place. >> Mililani has been the top seed out of the West since 2010, when it was No. 2 behind PC. The Trojans have been seeded in the top two in the West every year since 2009. >> Kapolei […]

OIA volleyball playoffs take shape

By Billy Hull on October 5, 2016

A night after the OIA West finished its girls volleyball regular season, the OIA East closes out its schedule with the playoffs set to begin next week. The first-round playoff pairings will be determined by the outcome of two matches played tonight. Farrington and Kalaheo, which are both 8-2, square off with the winner taking third place and the loser finishing in fourth. The fifth- and sixth-place spots are also up for grabs when Kalani (5-5) plays Kailua (4-6). Castle […]

Anuenue clinches first playoff berth

By Billy Hull on September 28, 2016

Anuenue didn’t show No. 7 Moanalua much during the first set of Wednesday’s OIA East girls volleyball match. Na Koa coach Pakalana Chan had a good feeling, however, that it would change in the second set. “It’s always been a struggle for my girls as far as getting going,” Chan said. “It’s disheartening to see them in the first set when I know that the second set is what they should have done in the first set.” Na Koa bounced […]

Energy Spike: LJA loves home crowd

By Paul Honda on September 28, 2016

The Bulldogs of Le Jardin don’t need any help to be a very good girls volleyball team. But they appreciate all the help they can get. The Bulldogs improved to 4-1 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu with a stunning 25-23, 25-23 win over No. 9 Hawaii Baptist on Tuesday night. The win was epic for Le Jardin, which had never beaten the perennial D-II state powerhouse Eagles. “We played them in the ILH championships and state championships,” senior setter […]

Spartans learning; Warriors’ process continues

By Nick Abramo on September 23, 2016

Kamehameha remained undefeated at 7-0 on Thursday night, batting down a girls volleyball challenge from Interscholastic League of Honolulu foe Maryknoll, and now they’re aiming at bigger things. It was a learning experience for the Spartans (2-5), who pulled off an upset of No. 6 Punahou earlier this season and had a 15-12 lead on the Warriors in the first set in Thursday’s 25-21, 25-15 loss. Under head coach Luis Ramirez, No. 4 Maryknoll took the defending Division I state […]

No. 1 Kahuku passes another volleyball test

By Nick Abramo on September 22, 2016

If you didn’t know it before, you know it now. Kahuku girls volleyball coach Mounia Tachibana expects a lot from her players. Sure, she was quite happy that the Red Raiders were in sync and stuck to the game plan in a 25-15, 25-15 sweep of Moanalua in a matchup of unbeatens Wednesday night. In a sense, it was a huge win for Kahuku (7-0), which for the past two seasons could never get past Na Menehune (6-1). But, simply […]
