The Fab Freshman: ‘Iolani’s Oglivie named POY

By Paul Honda on November 29, 2016

Elena Oglivie isn’t just another ninth grader finding her way through a mountain of homework every night as a student at ‘Iolani School. After all, she thrives on it. Especially algebra. And there’s more to enjoy. Hula. Snacking. Snacking is big for an athlete who never seems to tire of playing volleyball year-round at a high level. An elite level. She is, after all, the 2016 Star-Advertiser Girls Volleyball All-State Fab 15 player of the year. The All-State team was […]

HPW: Congratulations on a great season and the championship, Coach. Lamb: Hope you had a good Thanksgiving. It’s one of the few days I truly get […]

2016 All-State Fab 15 volleyball slide show

By Jerry Campany on November 29, 2016

For all of the great players to come out of Hawaii for the past quarter century, ‘Iolani outside hitter Elena Oglivie‘s potential stands right alongside them. Oglivie is the first freshman to be named player of the year by a newspaper in Hawaii. Previously, the highest finishing freshman was fourth, which Alohi Robins-Hardy of Kamehameha did in 2010. You can read the full story that appeared in today’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser here. That puts the freshman on a pretty elite list […]

Hawaii Baptist swept the Division II awards with junior Ally Wada earning MVP honors and Myles Shoji winning coach of the year. Christian Academy swept the Division III […]

Big Blue Bite: LJA’s first state crown

By Paul Honda on October 30, 2016

The pendulum swung from one great team to the other, back and forth. In the end, the momentum belonged to tiny Le Jardin, which captured its first state championship girls volleyball — or any sport — with a frantic, five-set thriller win over four-time defending champion Hawaii Baptist in the New City Nissan/HHSAA State Championships on Saturday. Timing, as well as talent, meant a lot. The Bulldogs, with all-tournament most outstanding player Nina Krupa at setter, and all-tourney selections Kassidy […]

Rockets Red Glare: ‘Iolani survives, thrives

By Paul Honda on October 30, 2016

Kainoa Obrey. A happy man. He’s not leaping for joy. Not in public. Maybe that’s something that happens when the ‘Iolani Raiders have quiet time together. They won their first girls volleyball state championship since 2001 — when the late, great Ann Kang was head coach — and when all the exuberance and hugging was done, the Raiders calmly departed Neal Blaisdell Center. The pendulum swung painfully wild at times for ‘Iolani this season, from nearly being eliminated from state-tourney […]

Setters hold the key to state volleyball final

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 29, 2016

Kamehameha’s Lexis Akeo is a sophomore with state championship credentials. ‘Iolani’s Ana Oglivie is a senior in her first season as a varsity setter. Both kept their teams on track this week to set up a rematch of last year’s Division I state tournament final. Akeo earned setting responsibilities as a freshman and helped pilot Kamehameha to a five-set victory over ‘Iolani in last year’s title match. Oglivie was on the other side of the net that night as the […]
