Ka‘aha‘aina-Torres all aces as ‘Iolani outlasts Punahou

By Paul Honda on September 12, 2017

Saige Ka‘aha‘aina-Torres had 10 kills, 22 assists and five aces as host No. 2 ‘Iolani outlasted No. 3 Punahou 25-15, 33-31 on Tuesday night. A raucous home crowd, led by roughly 100 ‘Iolani students, created an electric vibe in the home gym. “It’s hot. I’m sweating. That shows it was a competitive match. Those are the kinds of matches you remember most, having a game that was 33-31,” Raiders coach Kainoa Obrey said. “Good plays, bad plays, you remember the […]

No. 1 Kamehameha earns state berth…barely

By Paul Honda on September 12, 2017

Kili Robins pounded 14 kills and Keonilei Akana added 13 as No. 1 Kamehameha edged No. 6 Maryknoll 25-16, 21-25, 25-21 on Tuesday night at ‘Iolani. The Warriors (5-1) clinched the first-round title of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu and secured an automatic state-tournament berth. It was almost not meant to be, however. If Maryknoll (1-4) had pulled off an upset win, Kamehameha would have slid into a first-place tie with ‘Iolani, which later beat Punahou in the second match […]

Q&A: ‘Iolani All-State OH Saige Ka‘aha‘aina-Torres

By Paul Honda on September 12, 2017

Poet, student, athlete and eldest daugther, Saige Ka‘aha‘aina-Torres loves volleyball and maybe she loves hiking with her parents and two younger brothers even more. With a key ILH doubleheader coming up this afternoon at ‘Iolani’s Father Bray Athletic Center — Maryknoll vs. Kamehameha, 5 p.m., and Punahou vs. ‘Iolani, 7 p.m. — she chatted with Hawaii Prep World about being the sole senior on her team, and published poetry. She was featured in today’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser. Saige Ka‘aha‘aina-Torres ‘Iolani girls […]

Kainoa Downing is thrilled to be back coaching volleyball at the high school level. Downing, who led Kamehameha to the boys Division I state championship in 2011, is off to a 1-3 start at Kaiser heading into tonight’s match at Moanalua. The Cougars are in Division II this season. “We have really, really good kids this year,” he said over the phone recently. “We’re trying to change the culture of girls volleyball here into a winning culture. We want to […]

Kamehameha girls vault to No. 1

By Nick Abramo on September 11, 2017

After beating ‘Iolani in three sets last week to take over sole possession of first place in the ILH, Kamehameha leaped over the Raiders into the No. 1 spot in the latest Honolulu Star-Advertiser Girls Volleyball Top 10 released today. The Warriors have ripped off three straight wins to move to 4-1 in league play since losing in three sets in their first meeting with ‘Iolani. The Raiders dropped to No. 2 after losing twice in league play. Punahou, which […]

Kapolei makes a move in volleyball Top 10

By Nick Abramo on September 4, 2017

Kapolei’s dominant win over Mililani on Thursday impressed voters enough to push the Hurricanes up three spots to No. 5 in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser girls volleyball Top 10 released Monday. It was the league season opener, but the Hurricanes appeared to be in midseason form in getting the rare win over the Oahu Interscholastic Association powerhouse Trojans. Nos. 1 through 4 — ‘Iolani, Kamehameha, Punahou and Kahuku — remained the same as last week’s first poll of the season. Hawaii […]

Warriors crisp and sharp in sweep of Buffanblu

By Paul Honda on September 1, 2017

The only thing that really didn’t go right for longtime Kamehameha girls volleyball coach Chris Blake was his post-match dinner. He showed up at Rainbow Drive In on Thursday night, in need of his favorite: chili plate. The bad news: sold out. That’s one of the few things that haven’t gone well for the physics instructor on or off the court. His program is still elite, ranked No. 2 in the state, but with Punahou and top-ranked ‘Iolani right there […]

Kapolei breaks through against Mililani

By Nick Abramo on August 30, 2017

Kapolei continues to push the envelope of success and ability in Oahu Interscholastic Association volleyball. The Hurricanes opened the regular season in dominant fashion with a 25-15, 25-18 victory over perennial OIA West power Mililani on Wednesday night. What’s more is that they did it on the Trojans’ home court. “It’s big any time you can beat them or Kahuku,” Kapolei coach Naidah Gamurot said. A win over Mililani had never happened in the career of Hurricanes junior setter Olivia […]
