Kamehameha junior Keonilei Akana and ‘Iolani junior Elena Oglivie were named to the all-tournament team at the Durango Fall Classic for leading their teams to high finishes in the elite field. Akana helped the Warriors finish in sixth place and the Raiders ended the tournament in ninth. No. 1-ranked Kamehameha is off to a strong start at the Durango Fall Classic in Las Vegas. The Warriors opened play today in the prestigious annual girls volleyball tournament with a 25-19, 25-10 sweep of Village Christian (Calif.). Then, they defeated powerhouse Archbishop Mitty (Calif.) 25-18, 24-26, 25-17. Their final match was a 25-9, 25-2 win over Rim of the World (Calif.) to finish 3-0 in pool play. No. 6 Mililani gives No. 5 Kapolei some payback

Not this year. Last year, Kapolei broke through for a rare victory against Mililani in the OIA girls volleyball regular season. On Thursday night, the Trojans overpowered the Hurricanes 25-11, 25-15 at the Mililani gym. With the win, Mililani took over sole possession of the OIA West standings at 5-0. The top two spots in the first Honolulu Star-Advertiser Girls Volleyball Top 10 of the season were not a surprise. Defending state champion Kamehameha took the No. 1 spot ahead of ‘Iolani with seven out of 10 first-place votes. Both teams are nationally ranked by both MaxPreps and USA Today. The young, tall, composed Punahou Buffanblu stepped onto ‘Iolani’s home court with full confidence. It showed as the visitors took the opening set before a robust audience that nearly filled the gym. Then ‘Iolani simmered down and rallied for a 20-25, 25-12, 25-16 victory during opening week of the ILH girls volleyball regular season.
