Grit and guts by Roosevelt in nonconference loss to ‘Iolani

By Paul Honda on November 20, 2021

Some teams chose to keep their bye weeks. Roosevelt wanted to play one of the best in Division I. In the aftermath of a 40-7 loss to No. 6 ‘Iolani, one that doesn’t count in the OIA Division I standings, Rough Riders coach Kui Kahooilihala lamented the defeat. Roosevelt lined up without eight starters on Friday. One of them, highly-recruited linebacker Kaeo Akana, was on a recruiting trip on Friday. Yet, the Rough Riders defense was steady in the first […]

Brody Bantolina passes 1,000-yard mark as No. 6 ‘Iolani rolls to 40-7 win over Roosevelt

By Paul Honda on November 20, 2021

It took Roosevelt and ‘Iolani 52 years to meet on the gridiron again for an official game. This time, it wasn’t so close. The visiting ‘Iolani Raiders scored 28 unanswered points in a 40-7 runaway win over Roosevelt on Friday night at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium. When the Raiders and Rough Riders last met on Sept. 19, 1969, ‘Iolani escaped with a 7-6 win. Keeper of the vault Jerry Campany shared this ancient history. Unlike that day, when ‘Iolani had 109 […]

No. 1 Kahuku wins one for the late David Vimahi

By Paul Honda on November 13, 2021

The loss of coach David Vimahi could have stonewalled the Kahuku Red Raiders. Instead, the top-ranked football team in the Star-Advertiser Football Top 10 rose to the challenge with a 55-20 victory over No. 3 Mililani on Saturday night at John Kauinana Stadium. At 5-0, Big Red is alone atop the OIA Open Division standings. Mililani took its first loss after three wins. The visiting team in white uniforms and red helmets spoiled Mililani’s homecoming, but it wasn’t easy despite […]

Stout defense leads Aiea in key win over Castle

By Paul Honda on November 13, 2021

Championship material, maybe. At 2-1 in OIA Division I, title town is a little less distant for Aiea. After a 43-21 win over Castle on Friday, Na Alii can reliably count on two things that the late, great Dick Tomey valued. Special teams. Defense. All the offensive fireworks that came in the second half — Aiea led 13-7 at the break — were a relief to the 300 or so fans clad in forest green and white at Radford’s James […]

Men in black, white and orange: Campbell’s lockdown ‘D’

By Paul Honda on November 7, 2021

Orange Crush is always refreshing. At Campbell, life in the post-Titus era has been part revelation, part reality. A cast of contributors who do their jobs. What was lost with the cancelled 2020 season — offensive playmaker Titus Mokiao-Atimalala was destined for another monster season — has been found once again through the Sabers’ defense. Eight Campbell defenders notched at least three tackles in a 36-3 win over No. 9 Kapolei on Saturday night. The Hurricanes missed the services of […]

Evolution of trench warfare: Saint Louis wins ILH football crown — again

By Paul Honda on November 6, 2021

There’s an old saying, that victory goes to the last man standing. In this case, it was No. 2 Saint Louis that was just a bit healthier, riding its ground attack behind a giant, pulverizing wall of trench men for a 35-21 win over No. 3 Kamehameha in the final of the ILH football playoffs at Aloha Stadium. Saint Louis (5-3, 2-2 ILH regular season) will represent the ILH in the state tournament on Dec. 18. Kamehameha, which was ranked […]
