Football Tour: Farrington

By Paul Honda on August 13, 2013

Tour stop: Friday, Aug. 9, 2013 Just about every team in the state except Punahou has major work in progress, replacing outgoing senior starters. Farrington lost its entire starting offensive line to graduation, 10 offensive starters in all. Factor in academic casualties in preseason, and Coach Randall Okimoto and his staff get a chance to see a lot of new guys in their rotations. Later? Who knows. But they’ve got a stellar foundation to build on defensively.

Oahu’s rivalry week comes early

By Jerry Campany on August 12, 2013

These are your daddy’s preseason games. So often high school coaches approach preseason games the same way NFL coaches do, getting their starters in for a series or two and settling back to watch everyone else get a chance after that. But in the first week of 2013, it seemed everyone was going for the throat. Sure, Mililani used both its quarterbacks when coach Rod York has pledged that he will choose one to be the starter when games start […]

Kennedy Who? Waianae’s defense just fine

By Jerry Campany on August 10, 2013

Early in camp, Waianae coach Daniel Matsumoto was among the first to point out that one player is not going to be able replace Kennedy Tulimasealii. How about a whole corps of them? The Seariders sacked Farrington quarterback Montana Liana six times and pressured him many more in a 33-16 win over the Governors at Raymond Torii Field on Friday night. Nayton Kuresa led the way with two bags, followed by Senio Samisoni and Kalalena Mauga with one each. Shayne-Lopaka […]

Matsumoto vs. Okimoto to open season

By Jerry Campany on August 8, 2013

Of all of the games to open the season, none are as steeped in tradition as the game between OIA rivals Farrington and Waianae. The affair, which resumes at Waianae on Friday, pits two of the OIA’s longest-serving head coaches in Danny Matsumoto of Waianae and Randall Okimoto of Farrington. Okimoto has the edge on his rival 3-2 since he took over at the beginning of the 2002 season, and the Govs have won the last two meetings. The last […]

It’s time for defense at Farrington

By Jerry Campany on August 4, 2013

With Tyler Taumua and Amo Silva running the ball for Farrington the last two years, the Governors had their highest average points per game since 1973 and averaged more than 30 points in each season. They had never done that before. But with the two stellar running backs gone to graduation, this year’s fortunes will probably rest with Manly Williams and the defense. That unit gave up more than 17 ppg for the first time since 2005 and probably can’t […]

Tyler Taumua Stat Ticker update

By Paul Honda on October 27, 2011

Oh yes, it’s that time again, ladies and germs, to elaborate and congratulate these fine football teams. Perhaps no compliment would be more apt than one to Tyler Taumua as we examine the Tyler Taumua Stat Ticker. It’s been a few weeks since we last examined the junior running back’s prolific numbers. With the Great Wall of Bamboolas clearing his way, Taumua had been on a record pace through six games. How has he fared lately? He suffered an injury […]
