The Ortiz ohana requested that the Farrington Governors football team come to Mokuleia one last time, so coach Randall Okimoto and his squad made the trek on Tuesday. The Govs had been to the beach where Dayne Ortiz suddenly disappeared, lost in the sea. They were there on Sunday and Monday as search crews worked valiantly. On Monday night, they honored their teammate with a vigil on campus. The return to Mokuleia on Tuesday began with a light practice on […]
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 It was a reversal of roles, in a sense. Farrington started the season 0-2 with a pair of nonconference losses, then ran the table until this OIA Red championship game. Mililani? After a season-opening loss to Punahou, the Trojans were mostly dominant in the OIA Red West, and then through the playoffs. Could Farrington trip the men of Troy? Or is the power shift from East to West solidified over these past few years?
The vigil for Dayne Ortiz at Farrington High School on Monday night drew about 1,000. Our staff at the Star-Advertiser covered it. Here is a photo gallery by photographer Bruce Asato. Above are photos generously provided by the Farrington community. This afternoon, the team headed back to Mokuleia for a light practice. After that, at the Ortiz ohana’s request, the team will be at the beach where Dayne disappeared, coach Randall Okimoto said. Below, artwork on sneakers by Dylan Tagoilelagi.
The Farrington High School community has drawn closer together through the heartbreaking disappearance of Farrington football player Dayne Ortiz. The cornerback was part of a defensive unit that became one of the best in the state. Coach Randall Okimoto calls Ortiz one of the team’s most improved players. But Ortiz was lost at sea on Saturday while fishing with his family at Mokuleia Beach. He was on a kayak when rough waters capsized it, and he has not been seen […]

Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 (post-game) Epic? Sure, if you love defense forever. It was zero to zero at the half, but it wasn’t for a lack of action. It’s been a long, long time since I’d seen a defensive battle like this, let alone one in a playoff game with a state-tournament berth (and a spot in the OIA Red title game) as a reward.
