Oahu powers need to avoid the bagel

By Jerry Campany on October 19, 2014

It’s a mantra shared by all coaches still competing as the OIA enters its semifinals. Thinking like that is a big reason why they have made it this far. But they may be wise to look at the big picture and realize that all they have to do is win one game in two chances to make it to the state tournament. The OIA semifinals pit Campbell vs. Mililani and Kahuku vs. Farrington on Thursday at Aloha Stadium. Winners play […]

State semifinalists still have the stuff

By Nick Abramo on October 6, 2014

On Saturday night at Aloha Stadium, No. 6 Farrington did just enough to earn a 29-27 win over No. 7 Campbell in a game that decided second place and a first-round bye in the OIA Blue Division. Both teams made it to the semifinals of the state tournament a year ago, and both gave a signal that, while they may be running teams in an era of pass-crazy squads, they are not going to be easy to beat from here […]

TRENCH WARFARE: Fehoko vs. Tafai

By Billy Hull on October 4, 2014

Five-star Texas Tech commit Breiden Fehoko is a monster on the Govs defensive line. Double teams and even triple teams aren’t uncommon against the 6-foot-3, 286-pounder, who will follow in the footsteps of older brother V.J. and become a Red Raider in the spring as he graduates early. Before he gets there, Fehoko has his senior season at Farrington to complete. The Govs have a chance to wrap up a first-round bye with a victory over Campbell on Saturday night […]

VIDEO: #3 Farrington at #2 Mililani

By Paul Honda on October 2, 2014

Two unbeaten teams in the OIA Blue Division went full-tilt from the start, but fumbles derailed the Governors early. Vavae Malepeai rushed for 199 yards and four TDs while McKenzie Milton passed for 278 yards and ran for another 111 in Mililani’s 41-14 win.

A three-play sequence to end the first half of the Mililani-Farrington football game on Saturday spelled bad news for both teams. In the end, Mililani defensive back Ramsey Tacadena suffered an injured elbow moments after intercepting a pass. Farrington quarterback Montana Liana, ejected for a late hit on Tacadena, faces a one-game suspension. “(Officials) made the right call. It was a hit on a defenseless player,” said OIA chief official Jim Beavers, who saw the game video later. Liana’s frustration […]

Farrington had its share of tricks

By Paul Honda on September 28, 2014

The Govs and Trojans had their share of wrinkles to start the game on Friday night. Mililani put tight end Tyler Santos in motion and used him as a blocker on the interior for one snap, looking much like Farrington’s Freedom Alualu when he lines up as a slotback before going in motion. Maybe the Trojans used Santos in Alualu’s role during practice? But the Mamiya wrinkle was craftier. On Farrington’s first play from scrimmage, he lined up in the […]

LIVE BLOG: Mililani 41, Farrington 14, final

By Paul Honda on September 27, 2014

First quarter A calculated risk by York on the opening series pays off. Milton came through with a first-down pass on fourth-and-6, and then hit Timoteo for a 42-yard touchdown strike to give the Trojans a 6-0 lead. Farrington wasted no time. On the next play from scrimmage, Mamiya lined up at tailback, went in motion to the slot and reeled in a quick slant pass for an 80-yard touchdown. Sasaoka’s PAT kick gave the Govs a 7-6 lead with […]

Farrington’s Liana starts to fling it

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 13, 2014

Over his two-plus years as Farrington’s starting quarterback, Montana Liana spent most of his time handing the ball to a series of productive Governor running backs. And why not? Liana shared the backfield with All-State running backs Abraham Silva and Tyler Taumua as a sophomore and gave the ball to Sanele Lavatai with regularity last year. The Governors’ running game continued to churn through four games this fall with Ranan Mamiya and Challen Faamatau powering the offense. Liana took a […]
