VIDEO: Maui vs. #5 Farrington (state tourney)

The quarterfinal round of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Division I State Football Championships included tough-nosed, smashmouth teams. The MIL champion Sabers jumped to a 6-0 lead and kept the game close until the second half. Big TD runs by Govs’ running backs Ranan Mamiya and Challen Faamatau in a 22-6 victory at Aloha Stadium.

Farrington receiver Kingston Moses-Sanchez is recovering from a concussion he suffered in Saturday’s 31-19 victory over Campbell in the OIA third-place game at Mililani, according to Governors coach Randall Okimoto. Moses-Sanchez was on a route and attempting to catch a pass from quarterback Montana Liana late in the third quarter. As the ball arrived, he was hit high by Campbell safety Abiel Taito. This was a sloppy, physical, mistake-prone game for both teams, but in the end, immensely exciting, thrilling and dramatic. Down to the last 10 seconds. Kesi Ah-Hoy’s 4-yard TD run gave the Red Raiders a 21-14 win in the OIA Division I semifinal round at Aloha Stadium.

Farrington moves up two spots to No. 4

Two weeks ago, Farrington and Kahuku were tied at No. 5 in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Top 10 football poll. Last week, Kahuku was No. 5 and Farrington No. 6. This week, the poll, which will be in Tuesday’s Star-Advertiser and is on the front page of hawaiiprepworld.com, has the Governors at No. 4 and the Red Raiders at No. 5.
