The OIA Division I third-place game between powerhouses Waianae and Farrington turned out to be as tight a battle as expected. With the league’s final state-tournament berth at stake, Waianae held on for a 20-19 victory at John Kauinana Stadium. There are championship games and there are final battles to survive. Seventh-ranked Farrington (7-3) and sixth-ranked Waianae (7-3) are simply doing this: playing for the right to play in the state tournament. The loser is done for the season. These programs go back a long time, all right. But playing each other in an ELIMINATION GRIDIRON BATTLE? Brother-in-arms Jerry Campany examined this earlier today in this post. FYI, the OIA junior varsity game is over. Kahuku 27, Waianae 7. That […]

OIA third place: Win or go home

By Jerry Campany on October 31, 2015

It is probably the most emotional game of the OIA season. While Kahuku and Mililani left their hearts on the turf at Aloha Stadium in the OIA title game on Friday, Farrington and Waianae will be playing for something much more on Saturday. The loser goes home. Farrington coach Randall Okimoto has been involved in six such games, way more than any other coach, and he won five of them. But his lone loss came to Waianae in 2005 and […]

As written in our game preview, Farrington is the only school in the state with three separate wins over Kahuku in the last 15 years. Do the Govs have the girth to make it four on Friday night at Aloha Stadium? Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. On the line is a spot in the OIA title game. Kahuku has been involved in six of the last seven OIA title games, missing out only in 2013. The Govs are looking […]

Do the Governors have the girth?

By Paul Honda on October 22, 2015

Of any defense in the league, the Governors have historically had the mass and speed to give Kahuku a challenge in the trenches. Wins by Farrington in this series have been hard to come by, but from a purely physical matchup, the Govs have a shot. The big question is this: Will Farrington stay with its usual 11 starters? If coach Randall Okimoto sticks with his usual safeties and cornerbacks, that could be an issue. The Govs have had trouble […]

Farrington rested, Campbell weary

By Paul Honda on October 16, 2015

Farrington has rested up since pulling out a 21-14 win over the Sabers two weeks ago at Aloha Stadium. Campbell’s defense was outstanding that night, but hasn’t had a bye week since late August. Last week’s 27-21 win at Kaiser was epic, but the Sabers will need more of that postseason mojo. They might get it by grinding this out, the same way they did in the fourth quarter against Kaiser with a 7-minute-plus drive for the go-ahead TD. Terell […]
