Skippa Diaz Stadium open for business

By Jerry Campany on August 3, 2017

Kamehameha and Farrington haven’t played a meaningful game since Onosai Tanuvasa toted the rock for the Governors more than 40 years ago, but Friday’s clash means more than most. The neighborhood rivals have met 19 times since the Governors left the ILH way back in 1969, but always in August or September. This time, though, they will christen brand new Skippa Diaz Stadium on the Farrington campus, and that will mean plenty to fans who are lucky enough to find […]

PREP FOOTBALL COUNTDOWN: No. 8 Farrington

By Paul Honda on July 27, 2017

Sometimes, the journey is the reward. With a busload of departures due to graduation, the Farrington Governors look like a very different team this fall. On paper. The potent offense, steady defense — both were fortified by tremendous talent and vast experience. The Govs reached the OIA Division I championship game, upsetting Kapolei along the way, before losing in the HHSAA Open Division quarterfinals. Now, Coach Randall Okimoto and his staff are rebuilding with a team of mostly first-year starters […]

Coach Speak: Feedback on new football format

By Paul Honda on November 26, 2016

The timing was right. The state tournament, officially branded the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships, came to a close last weekend. Coaches, all of them, were done for the year. What did they think of the new format, adding one division of eight teams, expanding to a 20-team format? Most of the coaches who responded by phone, text or e-mail had plenty to say, and yet they agreed that the new three-tiered look is, well, awesome. They also had […]

By Paul Honda on November 11, 2016

NERDPOD: Quarterbacks v3.0 The Star-Advertiser and Hawaii Prep World’s Paul Honda breaks down some of the best quarterbacks in the state. This is more of a run-through than a breakdown of QB statistics for the first time since almost two months. Numbers don’t tell the whole story, of course. That’s why this is Nerdpod, not fanpod. Some amazing, eye-popping numbers this season. QBs listed below in random order for the most part. QUARTERBACKS Tua Tagovailoa, Saint Louis Measurables: 6-1, 210, […]

Govs’ Faamatau a warrior until the bitter end

By Billy Hull on November 5, 2016

You know those movies. The ones with the warrior hero, fighting until the very end, dying on his sword in the heat of battle. Farrington senior Challen Faamatau, who finishes his career with 3,306 rushing yards and 40 rushing touchdowns, battled to the bitter end of a 14-8 loss to Waianae in the first round of the Open Division in the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA State Football Championships on Saturday night at Aloha Stadium. Faamatau, who scored Farrington’s only touchdown on […]
