No. 10 Damien survives with wild finish

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 8, 2018

The buzz surrounding the frantic finish to Damien’s comeback win against Waipahu on Friday was just starting to settle when Eddie Klaneski’s focused to the week ahead rather than the just completed victory. “I hope we don’t have too many injuries that hurt us the rest of the way, because we have our nemesis in ‘Iolani coming up this week,” Klaneski said, moments after the Monarchs pulled out a 13–10 victory over the host Marauders in Friday’s OIA-ILH Division I […]

By Paul Honda on August 31, 2018

Going into their matchup with Washington state powerhouse Mt. Spokane, the Damien Monarchs are having an experience they will never forget. It began with Clem Hong, a Damien and Whitworth College graduate. Hong coaches at Mt. Spokane and went to school at Whitworth. His son plays for Mt. Spokane. “We’re playing in the Pine Bowl at Whitworth. This is their first time playing at Whitworth, as well,” Damien coach Eddie Klaneski said. Damien is 2-0 so far, a solid start […]

Former Damien athlete loses lawsuit against ILH

By Nick Abramo on August 28, 2018

A state circuit judge ruled in favor of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu and executive director Blane Gaison in a lawsuit challenging the league’s transfer rule. Last month, the parents of former Damien football player and wrestler Keoua Kauhi filed, dropped and then refiled the suit. At an Aug. 21 hearing, judge James Ashford made a summary judgment in favor of the ILH. Due to that summary judgment, Ashford did not consider a temporary restraining order or a preliminary injunction […]

Damien’s Ho‘ohuli has prodigious homecoming

By Brian McInnis on August 19, 2018

Maybe it was meant to be for Nanakuli native Duke Ho‘ohuli. The Damien sophomore linebacker — and backup quarterback — was pressed into duty in his secondary role on Saturday night in the Nanakuli Valley, as starting signal-caller Jake Holtz was knocked out of the game with a sprained ankle on the Monarchs’ opening drive against the Golden Hawks. Ho‘ohuli stepped in like nothing happened and completed the 96-yard drive, lofting a pass to Lindon Sevilleja for a 12-yard fade […]

Damien 34, Nanakuli 0, FINAL ———- Damien moving the ball up, killing clock with its stable of reserve backs … a 45-yard field-goal attempt is negated by a bad snap. Nope. Turnover on downs. Third quarter comes to an end with Nanakuli taking over at the Damien 40. Get chance to get on the board. Damien goes three-and-out. It looks like Sulu’s night is done with Damien up a very comfortable margin. Golden Hawks have fourth and goal from the […]

Sulu returns to help power Damien

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 11, 2018

The last time Aperamo Sulu appeared on a football field, he was being driven out of Vidinha Stadium. The Damien freshman running back suffered a leg injury on the Monarchs’ first play from scrimmage in a state tournament win over Kauai last November and left the stadium in an ambulance. Just over nine months later, Sulu appeared to be back at full strength in his return to action on Friday. He started at running back for the Monarchs and ran […]
