Jake Holtz’s poise, power spark No. 10 Damien over Radford

By Paul Honda on August 15, 2019

The deep stuff doesn’t seem to be a problem for Damien quarterback Jake Holtz. After spending much of the summer traveling to basketball camps and tournaments, the 6-foot-4 senior showed that his arm strength is good as ever on Thursday night. In a 34-12 win over Radford, No. 10 Damien showed that Holtz can make a defense pay dearly. Holtz hurled three TD passes — 43 yards to Makanale‘a Meyer, then 57 and 16 yards to Jarvis Natividad. On his […]

New-look Damien Monarchs still tough in the trenches

By Paul Honda on July 26, 2019

There are as many question marks about the 2019 Damien Monarchs as ever, perhaps. The new Monarchs answered the bell for the first scrimmage of the season against Campbell and Kaimuki on Thursday night in impressive fashion. A linebacker took the wheel at quarterback and guided Damien to touchdown drives against the Sabers and Bulldogs. Duke Ho‘ohuli, who starts at inside ‘backer, filled in at QB with starter Jake Holtz on a mainland trip. Ho‘ohuli’s pocket presence was poised and […]

GLORY DAYS: Coach Eddie Klaneski and the 2019 Damien Monarchs

By Nick Abramo on June 22, 2019

THIRD IN A SERIES This summer, head coaches from all 28 Oahu high school varsity football teams are being asked to recount their football playing days. One coach who has already been interviewed for this multi-part series pointed out what he thinks may be the value of this endeavor: “A lot of times, you only hear about coaches when they’re getting released or are having a special season. It’s super hard to have a special season, so this should shed […]

CLOSING THE BOOK: Damien Monarchs

By Jerry Campany on October 17, 2018

The only difference between the 2017 and 2018 Damien Monarchs football teams appears to be the fewer number of victories. The Monarchs generated three fewer points per game and allowed nearly the same amount of points as a year ago, but the effort turned from 10 wins last year to five this season. Damien averaged 20 points per game but that number has dropped a little bit in each of the last three years. The defense had a hand in […]

Damien set up well for 2019

By Brian McInnis on October 13, 2018

It’s not too often that you have a winning season, win your final game … and pack it up for the year without a trophy to show for it. Yet that was the case for Damien on Saturday night. The Monarchs traveled to Castle and defeated the OIA playoff-bound Knights 26-10 behind a breakout game from running back Logan Lauti, then celebrated a 5-4 year (5-3 ILH Division I) with family and supporters on their way to the team bus […]

By Brian McInnis on October 13, 2018

Damien 26, Castle 10, FINAL ———- 8:31: That’ll do ‘er. 8:23: Logan Lauti ices the win for Damien with a very nice, elusive run for 32 yards … and a penalty for taunting. Lauti with the TD hat trick tonight as part of his 25 rushes for 175 yards. 8:16: Castle gives it right back, as Pakele lines up at quarterback for maybe the first time ever. He keeps it … and fumbles. Damien ball at its own 35. 8:15: […]
