Damien nearly knocks off California champs

By Billy Hull on August 18, 2017

Villa Park’s week-long trip to Hawaii culminated in its season opener against Damien on Friday night at Skippa Diaz Stadium. With a roster of over 90 players, the seven-time defending Crestview League 3A champions in Orange County, ranked No. 11 in the region, had the look of a vastly superior team to the Division II Monarchs. That was hardly the case as Damien, which suited roughly 1/3 the number of players as Villa Park, hung tight with Spartans the entire […]

Injury dampens Damien’s opening win

By Billy Hull on August 5, 2017

Damien coach Eddie Klaneski said the Monarchs suited up 32 players for Saturday’s 42-7 season-opening win against Castle in Kaneohe. That forced many to play both ways, but the one area Klaneski said the Monarchs were OK at was in the trenches. “We only had one or two guys play both ways (on the line),” Klaneski said. That depth will be tested early as the Monarchs lost starting center Magnus Fonoti-Faumuina to a knee injury in the third quarter. Fonoti-Faumuina, […]

Damien, St. Francis may declare for D-I

By Nick Abramo on April 2, 2017

There’s no question Damien and St. Francis will be classified in Division II for Interscholastic League of Honolulu football this fall. It’s possible, however, that both the Monarchs and Saints will declare for Division I in the three-tiered state tournament. At a league meeting recently, according to sources, a discussion of athletic directors and league personnel centered on declaring Saint Louis, Punahou and Kamehameha for the Open Division state tournament, Damien and St. Francis for Division I states, and ‘Iolani […]
