GAME NIGHT 10/27: Damien/St. Francis

By Hawaii Prep World on October 27, 2017

The case could easily be made for Damien and St. Francis to be the top rivalry of the 2017 high school football season. The two teams meet tonight at Aloha Stadium for the fourth time to decide the ILH Division II champion and a berth in the Division I state tournament. The Monarchs won the first meeting, 27-20, but lost last Saturday, 15-14, in a game that came down to the final play. Sept. 15: Damien 27, St. Francis 20 […]

When a blocked kick isn’t a blocked kick. Maybe

By Paul Honda on October 23, 2017

It was the blocked kick that wasn’t a blocked kick. Damien had a 14-8 lead over St. Francis late in their Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II matchup on Saturday night. Damien, the regular-season winner, just needed one win to take the second-round title and the league championship. And a state-tournament berth. Then came a 48-yard bomb from Bubba Akana to Scotty McLeod, who made the catch and scored despite playing with a badly injured thumb. That tied the game […]

VIDEO: Saints’ tying TD, controversial PAT

By Paul Honda on October 21, 2017

Bubba Akana‘s game-tying touchdown pass to Scott McLeod with 1:10 remaining brought St. Francis back into a 14-all tie with Damien, but it was the beginning of a confusing situation when Damien’s Matt Faufata-Pedrina appeared to block the ensuing PAT kick. Damien was penalized for roughing the kicker. St. Francis went on to convert the next PAT attempt en route to a 15-14 playoff win. The teams will meet again next Friday for the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II […]

GAME NIGHT 10/21: Damien/St. Francis

By Hawaii Prep World on October 21, 2017

The Monarchs won the first meeting in an instant classic, coming back from 13 down in the third quarter to score 20 unanswered points and win 20-7. Two weeks ago, the Saints shut out Damien 19-0 to end the ILH first round. Nothing was on the line in that game. Was it a sign of things to come, or were the Monarchs laying low, waiting for this one? Kickoff is 3 p.m. Q&A: St. Francis coach Kip Akana ST. FRANCIS […]

Klaneski wants to end title chase next week

By Christian Shimabuku on October 13, 2017

Damien coach Eddie Klaneski hopes history will repeat itself when the Monarchs and St. Francis meet again for the ILH Division II championship at Aloha Stadium. Next Saturday’s matchup will mark exactly one year since Damien beat St. Francis 20-12 in Halawa to win the 2016 ILH Division II title. Like last year, both teams split the season series. The main difference this time around is that the Saints will have to beat the top-seeded Damien twice to claim the […]

GAME NIGHT 10/7: Damien/St. Francis

By Hawaii Prep World on October 7, 2017

Much of the intrigue in a rematch of Damien’s 27-20 win over St. Francis three weeks ago was lost when ‘Iolani beat the Saints last week. The Monarchs have already clinched the regular season ILH title. We’ll see how both coaches decide to handle this game. Top performances in series Damien passing vs. St. Francis: Marcus Fuafata-Pedrina with 189 yards in 2016 Damien rushing vs. St. Francis: Kepono Kawaakoa with 124 yards in 2014 Damien receiving vs. St. Francis: Shawn […]

Kauhi closes out another comeback win for No. 10 Damien

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 22, 2017

Through the first six games of the season, Damien running back Keoua Kauhi served as the Monarchs’ set-up man. On Friday, he was the closer. Kauhi entered Friday’s play as Damien’s leading rusher with 486 yards, but none of the junior’s 83 carries ended in the end zone. After the Monarchs fell behind 28-0 in the first quarter against ‘Iolani, Kauhi helped spark Damien’s second comeback win in as many weeks by finishing off three touchdown runs, including the game-winner […]
