Four athletes won 5-kilometer high school league cross country championships on Oahu on Saturday. Hanalani’s Adam Harder and McKinley’s Narayana Schneider are repeat winners. Hawaii Baptist coach Derek Coryell was named Hawaii’s coach of the year for 2018 by the U.S. Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association. Maui High’s Hunter Shields is the the Gatorade Hawaii boys cross country runner of the year, the Gatorade Company announced recently. The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. Seabury Hall’s Chloe Gangnath is the Gatorade Hawaii girls cross country runner of the year, the Gatorade Company announced recently. The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character. The 5-foot-7 senior won the state meet in the fall with a time of 19 minutes, 20.73 seconds, a meet record and 47.46 seconds ahead of the next closest competitor. Hawaii Baptist’s first state title in girls cross country came in dominating fashion. The Eagles placed four girls in the top 10 to claim the Division II title at Saturday’s Honolulu Marathon/HHSAA State Championships at Central Oahu Regional Park.
