Grossman still the one to beat

Seabury Hall senior distance runner Dakota Grossman has won too many cross country meets over the years to count, but on Saturday she won one that will really count. Grossman, who is trying to become just the second girls runner to win four successive state championships, took the ‘Iolani Invitational by nearly 30 seconds at Kualoa Ranch on Saturday. Mililani’s Vanessa Roybal and Kalaheo’s Makai Clemons put down Oahu’s fastest times of the cross-country season on Saturday at Pearl City. Roybal, who was running as a JV runner, blazed through the three miles in 19 minutes, six seconds to dust the field. The last time Kamehameha’s Davis Kaahanui approached the starting line at a cross country meet, he dusted a field of Hawaii’s best runners by more than 30 seconds last October. The next time he toed the line, he might have been even more impressive. Kaahanui finished second in the Honolulu Marathon/Kaiser Invitational cross country meet on Saturday, beating all Hawaii competition but losing to Jackson Marshall of Woodbridge (Calif.) by 12 seconds.
