Kaiser’s Tashiro wins season opener

Defending state cross country champion Lisa Tashiro of Kaiser won the season-opening Michael Doran Invitational on Saturday at Kalani. Tashiro finished the girls 3-mile race in 20 minutes, 31.54 seconds. Cassandra Frenzel of Kalaheo was second in 21:43.05 and teammate Emily McLemore was third in 21:54.90. Yabe and Ondo run to BIIF cross country wins

Waiakea’s Saya Yabe and Evyn Prine finished 1-2 in the first Big Island Interscholastic Federation cross country race of the season on Saturday. Yabe covered the 3-mile Hawaii Preparatory Academy course in 22 minutes, 54.48 seconds. As a team, the Warriors took second place to host Ka Makani. She swings a mighty bat, fields with a leather glove and one day… Krystin Wong will be handling scalpels and saving lives. The Punahou softball player was one of 59 student-athletes from around Oahu who signed a letter of intent this morning during the Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance signing ceremony at the Honolulu Elks Lodge, Waikiki. Kruse picks up Gatorade award

As expected, Kamehameha’s Kaeo Kruse was selected as the Gatorade Cross Country Runner of the Year for Hawaii. Kruse earned his first state title at the end of the fall season with a time of 15 minutes, 38.1 seconds as well as leading the Warriors to the team title. He also won the ILH. He then finished 33rd at the Foot Locker South Regional championships, the highest Hawaii finisher. He ran a 16:25.7 in that race. Kruse follows former teammate […]

Kaiser’s Lisa Tashiro was named the Gatorade Hawaii Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year on Thursday. Tashiro, a junior, raced to the girls state championship with a 3-mile time of 18 minutes, 59.9 seconds last fall at Central Oahu Regional Park. As a team, the Cougars finished second. Pahoa’s runners wrapped up their season after seeing Hurricane Iselle blow through their district in August and lava from Kilauea on the verge of cutting off its town. The Mililani girls and Pearl City boys ran to OIA Western Division cross-country championships at Campbell on Saturday. Vanessa Roybal (19 minutes, 51.26 seconds) and Lauren Gibbs finished in first and second place individually in the girls 3-mile race to spearhead the Trojans’ title run. Moanalua, Kaiser are OIA Eastern champs

The Moanlua boys and Kaiser girls ran to OIA Eastern Division cross-country championships at McKinley on Saturday. Eric Miyauchi placed second and Tyler Yada finished fourth in the 3-mile boys race, guiding Na Menehune to the title by one point over McKinley, 39 to 40.
