Maeda let go as Castle football coach

By Nick Abramo on December 1, 2016

Castle’s Nelson Maeda is out as Castle’s head football coach. Maeda confirmed via cell phone this afternoon that he is no longer the coach of the Knights and that it was the choice of the Castle administration. He found out that he was out as coach on Tuesday. “It was not a mutual decision,” he said. “It came unexpectedly and at a late stage. It’s been seven weeks since our season ended. We were finalizing our plans for next season’s […]

Nerdpod: Receivers v4.0

By Paul Honda on October 20, 2016

NERDPOD: Receivers v4.0 Hawaii Prep World’s Paul Honda breaks down some of the best pass catchers in the state. The regular season has drawn its curtain across the islands, but I’ll be adding more pass catchers to this list until the playoffs and state tourney are done, and maybe past that, too. This week, five additions. Numbers are nice, but seeing how they reflect a player’s season is usually intriguing. Even players who don’t have statistics that scratch the ceiling […]

Castle’s Maeda sees improvement

By Nick Abramo on October 12, 2016

Castle coach Nelson Maeda, who just completed his 20th season in charge of the Knights, talked openly about not quite getting the most out of all the pieces. “It’s disappointing,” he said after a 49-7 loss to Moanalua in the OIA first round. “We had the potential to go further and do better, but we just couldn’t quite jell as a team and that’s the frustrating part.” The Knights were only down by 14 points at the half and came […]

Balance helps Moanalua in playoff run

By Nick Abramo on October 8, 2016

Hawaii fans know the name Alakai Yuen. He’s Moanalua’s senior quarterback and he is considered one of the top at his position in the state. Usually, Na Menehune’s offense goes as he goes. The team, however, got a huge boost from its running game on Friday night in a 49-7 victory over Castle in the first round of the Oahu Interscholastic Association playoffs. Kea Rodrigues got the call early and often at running back and wound up with 64 yards […]

It should be a fun weekend of football as the OIA Division I playoffs begin while the ILH regular season ends and the OIA D-II playoff race gets sorted out. A berth in the state tournament is on the line with Castle (4-4, 3-4 OIA Red) traveling to play Moanalua (4-4, 3-4) in the first round of the OIA playoffs. The Knights are coming off an impressive 24-21 win over Kailua to earn the fifth seed out of the Red. […]

OIA playoff mania: Castle at Moanalua

By Nick Abramo on October 6, 2016

Below is the FIRST of Hawaii Prep World’s four-part quick look at the first round of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I football playoffs Friday and Saturday. This year, things are quite a bit different. In years past, teams playing in the first round faced elimination and also had a chance to move on. Now, the first-round losers are still eliminated, but the first-round winners gain a spot in the state tournament. The following week, the quarterfinal winners lock up […]

Pakele breaks out; Mejia breaks through

By Nick Abramo on October 2, 2016

Israel Pakele had a breakout game for Castle in a regular-season ending 24-21 victory over Windward rival Kailua on Saturday night. For Kailua, defensive end Christian Mejia had another one of many fantastic outings. Twice, he broke through the line to block field goals, among other highlights. Let’s talk about Pakele first. He got some great blocking up front, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. He hit the holes quickly and when he ran into the opposition, he made […]
